Craigslist, Ebay and other online buying/selling scams.

I posted on Kijiji a few days ago to sell our Murphy Bed/ Wall bed, and I've had 5 replies, both email and text messages, that are paypal scammers. I responded to one of them but quickly realised it was a scammer. Initially the person just asked me for the price, even though it's clearly listed on the ad posting.

Here's a few of our exchanges:
From: [email protected]
Price?

me:
Sorry I do not have paypal to receive payment but I will take cash or an interac direct deposit. Also we can deliver on receipt of funds, or will take cash on delivery.

From: [email protected]
I insisted on PayPal because i'm not with the premises to pay you cash and don't have access to my bank account online as i don't have internet banking and i can't go to the bank due to the nature of my job, but i can pay from my PayPal account, as i have my bank a/c attached to it, i will need you to give me your PayPal email address so i can make the payments asap for the item and please if you don't have PayPal account yet, it is very easy to set up, go to http://www.paypal.com and get it set up , after you have set it up i will only need the e-mail address you use for registration with PayPal so as to put the money through.

In my final exchange I said I do not want to set up Paypal and will only take cash or direct debit. I haven't heard back from them. I have many other similar enquiries, 2 via text.

I was trying to figure out how they scam you but I can see now from the other responses to this scam, that they likely make a fraudulent payment which is later recalled by the bank.

Anyway, just thought I'd share as I found the other messages about this scam really helpful in figuring out i was being scammed!

Welcome to Scamwarners Trxsta,

In this scam the scammer is NOT interested in your furniture. He wants to steal your money. No one will ever come to pick up the furniture. It is all a scam with the scammer playing all roles. The scammer is using a free email address and a fake name.

The scammer will send you a fake Paypal payment. He has a fake Paypal address from a free email provider. The payment will look real. Its a screen shot of a fake payment. He then will instruct you to pay a mover, shipper or agent. The fake Paypal email from the scammer would say that your Paypal funds will be released when you send the scammer (mover, agent or shipper) money via Western Union or Money Gram. In reality Paypal would never hold your funds.

Log into Paypal directly without any links to check for monies received or call Paypal directly from the number on their site.

If you are selling electronics, Cell phones or computers then the scammer is trying to steal your "item". Your fake funds will be released when you send the scammer a scan copy of a receipt showing you mailed your item.

This same scam works with fake checks and money orders. You and your bank will think they are real. After you cash the fake check. Days or weeks later your bank will inform you of the fraud. Your bank will have you repay the monies. Possibly close your account for fraud and report you to Law Enforcement.

The best thing to do is to sell in person face to face in a public place.

Please contacta moferatorstor if you have a question or information about this post.

Please do not tell the scammer he is posted here.
