Craigslist, Ebay and other online buying/selling scams.

I have reported this to Caravans for sale, may be linked to other topic which was started in January: viewtopic.php?p=201530.

The advert is here, http://ads.caravansforsale.co.uk/motorh ... 55446.aspx

On further looking, domain is unused for website and registered to another person, based in Glasgow. (viewtopic.php?p=201530#p203354).

I feel satisfied leaving this bargain behind, but concerned others may fall into same trap.

I'm not sure what the score is here, perhaps someone can explain why 'she' is so adamant about eBay's Buyer Protection?

Full email trail below for readers pleasure. First message sent from site was inquiring about whether it was a turbo engine, what the service history was like and how I can go and see the camper-van before buying. I had already tried calling but assumed 'she' put 'her' mobile number in to 'her' advert incorrectly as I could not be connected.

My contact details are public anyway so I am not concerned with them being listed.

Hello,
Its still for sale. Excellent condition with no damages or any faults. All necessary documents available. My current location is Scotland due to my work commitments, If this is going to be a quick sale I will let it go for £4,700 delivered at my costs. Are you familiar to eBay? I will list the motorhome on eBay Motors for £4,700 buy it now price and I will send you a link to my auction, so you can buy it immediate.
As soon as you will confirm the payment to eBay, I will proceed delivery without any additional costs for you.
In case you are not familiar with them, please read their Buyer Protection and will see that they cover 100% the transaction done through them up to £50,000. You will receive the motorhome with all documents. As you know eBay is the best company of online transactions. If indeed interested in it and have the funds, I will list it on eBay, as I have a 100% positive feedback with them.
Please let me know your decision.
Thank you

Alice

Lovely, I'm quite happy do do cash if everything is in order, and avoid you having to pay eBay sellers fees...

I have a few other questions beforehand:

1. Is this the turbo engine?
2. How does the service history look?
3. I'm off work for three days, would it be possible to arrange a visit to see condition.

I'll be travelling from Tongham in Surrey.

Hi xxxxx, it has turbo engine it comes with full service history. Due to my location and since view is not an option I have requested personal support and I was approved to use Buyer Protection Program. Here is how the process works through the Buyer Protection Program:

- I make the private listing on eBay for you,
- you go and buy it through their website,
- you have to pay for the item to eBay to secure the funds,
- they confirm me that they received the funds,
- I deliver the motorhome,
- you receive the motorhome,
- they send me the money,

Everything is covered by eBay. I will get paid only after you confirm that you received the motorhome in good order.
Let me know if this is acceptable. Thank you

Alice

Sorry to have wasted your time Mrs Brodie,I won't be buying without seeing it for myself.

I have reported your advert as I feel that it is a suspicious listing, if the advertising site receives multiple complaints, I expect action will be taken.

Happy selling!

Nick

Welcome to Scamwarners Removed (BW).

It is 100% scam and takes a standard form. There is one gang plastering many ad sites with fraudulent adverts and they even do the same with foreign ad sites. Every ad site from Autotrader UK to Gumtree and Ebay are affected. Though the fraud appears to have originated with Eastern European gangs it's quite possible that there are African gangs operating the same scam too.

The eBay buyer protection scheme is an important part of the scam because it is vital for the scammer to persuade the target victim to release money without seeing the vehicle. If the buyer insists on seeing the vehicle first the scam doesn't work. The scammer changes the name of the third party who are supposed to be acting as honest broker escrow company to attempt to make their scams more difficult to detect but, in actual fact, I do not know of anyone ever using a real escrow company in any ad site transaction. Theoretically it's possible, though very expensive, and the scammers' invention is a mirage achieved through fraudulent websites and spoofed email messages.

If you insist on viewing any inspecting and vehicle you attempt to buy from an ad site you can't fall victim to this gang, and any buyer is foolish not to do this.
I review cars on Autotrader UK and I pick up and note 100 or more fraudulent adverts daily, so the scale of the problem is clear.

The scammers don't expect to pick up a large number of victims but, because of the number of fraudulent adverts they post, they only need a small number of victims a week to achieve a multi-million pound turnover annually.

CAR ADVERTS - If a car seller mentions escrow - he's scamming you Never ever for any reason pay anything until you have seen and inspected the vehicle
