Craigslist, Ebay and other online buying/selling scams.

Are there any actual legitimate buyers on Gumtree??? The following are the scammers responding to my camper for sale.
Three more email addresses and mobiles to add to the Gumtree scammers list:
Steve (or Mary) - [email protected] - they txt you asking if still avail and to email more pictures. The phone number they use is 0428465117. Of course, they then go through the usual out of town/country, work long hours stuff, want to buy it, will pay by Paypal and an agent will collect - blah, blah, blah. :?

The same phone number was used for Andey - email: [email protected] - same Paypal spiel, out of country, agent to collect, yadda, yadda, yadda.

The third is from Neil Robbie - [email protected] - what do you know, he also wants to pay by PayPal and get an agent to collect. :x

What a way to spend a Sunday!

Hope these details help protect others against getting scammed. I also encourage anyone in the same boat to fill out the form on gov site http://www.scamwatch.gov.au to help others.

Cheers - Kismet

Thanks to all for updating. Please know this.

The scammer wanted to send you a fake Paypal payment. He has a fake Paypal address from a free email provider. The payment would look real. Its a screen shot of a fake payment. He then will instruct you to pay a mover, shipper or agent. The fake Paypal email from the scammer would say that your Paypal funds will be released when you send the scammer (mover, agent or shipper) money via Western Union or Money Gram. In reality Paypal would never hold your funds.

Log into Paypal directly without any links to check for monies received or call Paypal directly from the number on their site.

If you are selling electronics, Cell phones or computers then the scammer is trying to steal your "item". Your fake funds will be released when you send the scammer a scan copy of a receipt showing you mailed your item.

This same scam works with fake check and money orders. You and your bank will think they are real. After you cash the fake check. Days or weeks later your bank will inform you of the fraud. Your bank will have you repay the monies. Possibly close your account for fraud and report you to Law Enforcement.

The best thing to do is to sell in person face to face in a public place

Kismet06,

I've had the same people contact me from the gumtree website about my car.
[email protected] sent me a text asking to email.

Which state do you live in, out of interest?
I'm in the NT... wondering how far and wide these scammers are striking.

I think it's pretty much safe to say that if people aren't actually calling you in person, then they're not legit.
Frustrating, really. :?

Thanks for sharing your info.
I wasn't really sure about the email request, so I typed the address into google, and this forum popped up.

Very helpful!

Good luck selling your camper!

Cheers, Lil

Welcome to Scamwarners lil_hustle123,

These scammers are not targeting one State or Country. What they do is target every advert they can find. Scammers often send 100's to thousands of emails or text a day. They are hoping for just one successful scam a month or two.

I just had this scum [email protected] try to scam with the following:

ok no problem i will be paying you $42,000 with my PayPal account because it's attached to my bank account and its safe and very secure way to make payment. If my mode of payment is accepted just send me your paypal email address,(Paypal ID) or send me paypal payment request so i can pay in right away. Make sure you get back to me so that i can make the payment. I have a private courier agent that will handle the shipping after payments has been made, so no shipping included. OR better still you can just send me your bank account details and the payment will be made into your bank account asap.
And if you dont have a paypal account, you can easily go to http://www.paypal.com and sign up. its very easy. i will call you later I await your reply asap you can consider it sold and you can remove the add. and tell others interested that its sold.

Due to the nature of my job and my location i will not be able to come for inspection am a very busy type as i work long hours everyday,i don't really think i need to come for a look, because i have gone through your advertisement and i am satisfied with it so i will call you when am chanced from work but as of now we can be chatting online or sending emails.

I have just tried to be scammed by neilrobbie. I have read the exact same email here as he sent me about paying via PayPal and sending money via western union. I found this odd that PayPal sent me an email to say money is on hold and they will release money once receipt number is photocopied and sent to western union. I rang PayPal and gave them his details and sent the emails I received from this guy to phishing at PayPal. I then in turn sent him an email, saying he needed to use his credit card when he as able to have it to pay shipping himself. I got a reply saying I had his money and I neede to pay the shipping ASAP. I didn't respond to this email. I cannot believe this moron thought I would fall for this.

Thank you everyone for posting your stories. We received an SMS from this Neil Robbie last night asking us to email him as he saw the car we had just advertised for sale on gumtree. We emailed today & everything that some of you guys posted was spot on & the same thing that this person emailed. Asking to do the paypal thing & bank account details.

We stopped emailing & I thought I'd google that email address that it came up on this website.

Thank you again for Saving us from this scammer.

Am interested in your car listed on gumtree pls get back to me with the lowest price and condition on my email address: ([email protected])

This was the exact SMS we got from this stupid person or persons. Makes it harder for us to not trust people on gumtree or eBay.

Neil Robbie is so busy scamming people he has no time to meet you in person, thanks to this site I was able to identify this crooked person and avoid the time waster any further.

What's being done to catch this guy?

Has anyone got to the stage of having some courier arrive for the goods, who will be apparently signing the change of ownership papers also?
by Kim16 Mon Mar 03, 2014 3:10 am
He used [email protected] with me.
So he first send me a message to ask if I could send him the lowest price ans condition to his email address. After a while I got an email back, same as what you guys already said. The moment that I started to read this, I knew I couldn't trust this.
Anyone an idea if they are trying to catch this guy?
