Craigslist, Ebay and other online buying/selling scams.

Hi guys - I'm pretty sure this is a scam but I'd really be grateful for some advice on how to deal with it. I contacted 'Khalid' after he posted on a facebook group (since disappeared) advertising a 5Dmk3 camera, new, with a lot of other gear, for an improbably low price (using an account called Peter Wynes). I've copied in the following e-mail exchange below. He lists a UK address, website, and phone number (which I haven't tried).

Should I give him my address/fake address and try to get his bank details? Is this useful information to be able to report it as a scam? Is there enough proof that it is a scam already? Don't worry, I don't intend to part with any money, but I would like to make sure nobody else does.

Thanks!
Ivor

Khalid,

Great - could you give me your UK bank details for the money transfer? I would still feel better if you could give me an address in the UK too though.

Thanks,
Ivor

Hi Khalid,

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly - would I be able to come and check things out in person? Do you have a shop front in London?

Ivor

Dear Peter(?),

I saw your ad on facebook for a 5D mk iii and lenses, and while I am interested I am perhaps understandably a little suspicious about the price you listed as 2,370 USD. Is this the correct price for the whole package? Or only the camera? Are the items listed new? I am also suspicious of your e-mail address which does not sound like a business address. Do you have shop address in the UK that I would be able to visit?

Many thanks,
Ivor

No, he has your name just drop all contact. He probably wouldn't come looking for you but I advise you not to risk it.

Yes, you have identified it yourself as too good to be true.

+44 70 (070) is a redirect number which means this man could be located anywhere in the world and is almost certainly not in the UK.

He appears to be very forgetful, or maybe he doesn't know about his mobile phone shop website.

He appears not to know his own phone number or store name. I note that there is a regular company named 'Mobiles Ltd' with that address as its registered office. He's trying to impersonate it.

The (+44) 7031990306 number he gave you is a redirect number that scammers use to hide their real location. Only scammers use them, and he appears not to even know how to use it properly. Correctly they should be shown as 44 (0)70. If you dial from within the UK you drop the '0' and from outside you include it.

Anyone using that type of number is a scammer - full stop.

CAR ADVERTS - If a car seller mentions escrow - he's scamming you Never ever for any reason pay anything until you have seen and inspected the vehicle
