A scammer tried this on me yesterday....Same story....I listed a van on gumtree....
Email addy is [email protected]

Red flag for me was the Aussie name of Richard Dickson yet English is clearly not his first language....

I have decided to play with him after getting some advice from a mate over at realscam who also directed me to this thread :D

I am now waiting for payment to be made by the scammer to my paypal account...
Then the "courier agent" is supposed to contact me re shipping....
LOL..."Courier agent"....No way this scammer is even in Australia...

Scammers emails are below....I have bolded the parts that should set off the alarm bells for any Aussie reading this....

Due to the nature of my job and my location i will not be able to come for inspection am a very busy type as i work long hours everyday,i don't really think i need to come for a look, because i have gone through your advertisement and i am satisfied with it so i will call you when am chanced from work but as of now we can be chatting online or sending emails.
And can you please confirm to me again that the item is very good with no fault?

ok no problem i will be paying you $3,700 with my PayPal account because it's
attached to my bank account and its safe and very secure way to make
payment. If my mode of payment is accepted just send me your paypal
email address,(Paypal ID) or send me paypal payment request so i can pay in right
away. Make sure you get back to me so that i can make the payment. I have a private courier agent that will handle the shipping after payments has been made, so no shipping included. OR better still you can just send me your bank account details and the payment will be made into your bank account asap.
And if you dont have a paypal account, you can easily go to
http://www.paypal.com and sign up. its very easy. i will call you later
I await your reply asap you can consider it sold and you can remove the add. and tell others interested that its sold.

The pick up will be made at your given address after payment

ok no problem i have seen the paypal email address, the payment will be made for you soon and i will get back to you when done and also i will contact the courier agent as well so they can arrange time and date for pick up, so you can please stay online as i will get back to you soon. Consider it sold

The biggest red flag of all is the fact that who would buy a used car without looking at it first and giving it a test drive??

If you sell anything online you'll get contacted by these vermin. If they aren't aiming to send you 'spoofed' Paypal messages then they'll try to get you to accept counterfeit cheques.

Once you know what to watch out for, they're not hard to spot, and the more people who can spot them quickly the better it will be, as nothing will put them off like failure.

CAR ADVERTS - If a car seller mentions escrow - he's scamming you Never ever for any reason pay anything until you have seen and inspected the vehicle

And the winner is.....Spoofed paypal messages....I got 3 of them...

My scammer is rather lazy....He used Transaction Id: 0TR19308DU070732T.....
I googled the transaction number and it led me to multiple threads here at this forum....

So now he is waiting for me to send him $1000 by western union....
Important to note that the service he claims paypal provides is not something that paypal does....

I have asked my scammer to provide me the transaction number and account it was sent from....
Not sure really how to play with him after this...(??)

the payment has been made for you and all the money has been deducted
from my account, so what you are going to do now is to send the
courier fee of $1,000 to them and forward the western union details to
paypal and once this has been confirmed by them... your pending
payment will be released into your account and we can arrange time and
date for pick up.

Thanks and waiting for your response

NOTE: Paypal does not pay money in parts so there is no how they can
put some of the money into your account because all your money has
been deducted from my account and ready to be in your account they are
only waiting for the western union details from you so they can
release the money into your account

Thanks for the response... Yes you will not receive the payment now
cos its Pending by PayPal so as to verify that you are a Legitimate
seller of the purchased item...so they are temporarily holding the
money until the MTCN details has been sent to them as regards the
payment... this is to secure us both......PayPal is Holding the money
and waiting on you to send the MTCN information to them so that they
can verify it and confirm that you have truly sent the money before
the accreditation can take place...so i implore you to send the money
through western union and get back to them so that they can credit
your account ASAP

I have already made the payment..check your email and not your PayPal
account, you must have been notify about the payment i made..check
inbox,junk,bulk,spam

Of course, if the scammer can Paypal your money to you, he can similarly Paypal the fees to his imaginary collection agent, except the scam doesn't work if he does that.

The minute you're selling something and being asked to make any payment by the buyer - you're being scammed. Since time immemorial it's the buyer who does the paying, not the seller.

This really is the biggest red flag of all...
I'm the seller....I should NEVER have to pay anything....

TWIMC,

This guy is still active under [email protected]. I have basically had the same response to sale of my car almost word for word. How do we do something about this?
