Craigslist, Ebay and other online buying/selling scams.

appears to be a scammer.
Stupidly, I responded via email and not via Ebay messenger (won't do that again!)

The motorhome location is given as "UK" & on enquiry only as "Scotland" Cannot view the vehicle--that is not possible apparently!

He sends out the following "assurance" "The deal will go strictly according to eBay Buyer Protection rules and policy."

followed by
"Due to my location and since view is not an option I have requested personal support and I was approved to use Buyer Protection Program. Here is how the process works:

- you give me your full name and shipping address
- I start the transaction with the eBay,
- they send further payment instructions,
- you have to pay for the item to eBay to secure the funds,
- they confirm me that they received the funds,
- I deliver the motorhome,
- you receive the motorhome,
- they send me the money.

Everything is covered by eBay. I will get paid only after you confirm that you received the motorhome in good order.
Let me know if this is acceptable. Thank you"

His IP location showed it first to come via China and Spain
Then after a lull from Spain.

I have told him to shove his m/home where the sun don't shine.

Well done! :=)

Unfortunately, even if the email came from "right next door" to where you live, the scammer might be using a proxy.

But the procedure gives the scam away. You would get an "email from PayPal" with a spoofed sender's address telling you that "PayPal will receive the money and hold it in escrow" until you say you are satified with the m/home. Actually, the email would be from the scammer. PayPal does not offer an escrow service.
Of course, the fake PayPal would advise you to pay via Western Union or Moneygram - which are competing money transfer agencies, so this makes no sense.

Thank you for the info. I also have my house for sale and the scammers hit on that --some of the so ridiculously daft they couldn't be anything but bogus (Captain Jim who is sending an envoy with a box of money to pay for my house!) to one that to me sounded daft (agent send €3000 of traveller cheques from his "client" which he asks seller to cash and send the money to different address (why???) Met 2 people who fell for that, cashed fraudulent travellers cheques and got a visit from the police.

Glad I was directed to this site. Knowledge is power, as they say!!

Hi Hollyberry,
I'm glad you didn't fall for this money laundering scheme. :=)
Do you still have the scammers' email addresses? They would help a lot! Victims usually do Google searches for email addresses when they get suspicious.

i was also going for the camper van but the person selling was a lady called jane i also thought it was strange as they was selling a big 4 caravan at the same time who has a camper and a caravan also it was around the same price £5,000 and was to cheap same as the camper van

Its still for sale. Due to my location and since view is not an option I have requested personal support and I was approved to use Buyer Protection Program. Here is how the process works:

Welcome jerermbright! I'm glad you were not scammed.

The procedure mentioned in the scammer's email shows exactly how the scam works. The email you would get "from PayPal" would be from the scammer's other identity. There is no special Buyer Protection Program besides the normal procedure PayPal is using.

Did the scammer "Jane" use a different email address? If so, please post it to help others who do a Google search.

Out of interest, have you checked the origin of "Jane's" email?
Ones I had originated in Spain, though the m/home was supposed to be in Scotland.

no will look up the email and i am going a long with her to find out how it all works

To start the official transaction, I need to know your delivery information. As soon as I have them I'll start the official procedure, and eBay will send further instructions including payment and delivery terms.
Thank you

Jane

There is no need, we already know that the scammer is African, and we already know how this works. There are already several examples on this forum.

There is no process by which eBay collects and holds money for inspection. eBay does not get involved in sales from classified ad sites. The very fact that the scammer told you he was using this process guarantees that this is an African scammer (this particular format is used by African scammers) and it also tells us that he is going to send the standard fake eBay emails. The moment someone starts talking about the Buyer Protection Program (which has nothing to do with holding money) or starts talking about eBay when that's not where you bought the product, it's a certain scam.

Continuing contact with scammers who have your personal information is not advisable. The best thing to do is to drop this scammer now.

I concur with Dotti. You are using your personal email address to contact this scammer. This is not a good idea at all. Scammers can and do harass people who mess with them using email information and real life information.

I edited out your email address above. In our opinion, it is important to be safe on the internet. Putting your email address out on an open forum is a good way to end up with situations you do not want.

Please be safe and read this thread: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=8186 I encourage you to pay attention to the use of the word anonymous. :D
