Note: I knew what was going on and was not actually victimized. This is just an explanation of the scam.

Received a text message from 587-418-0911:

Hi, I am Diana Smith thanks for the email....Just asking about it to make sure it's in good condition. so I want you to assure me I will not be disappointed? I also want you to please understand that I won't be able to see it for myself,
I would have loved to come for the viewing by the weekend but I am located in Yukon white horse 194 Alsek Road, YT Y1A 4R3 and I thought of how to make this transaction work between us, which I came to conclusion with my husband to use a courier company to pick it up from your place but we will send the money to your account first and after you get the money in your account, the pick up company will come to help us carry it. Lest I forget, I would be transferring the funds to you through PayPal. if you don't have an account, it's very easy, safe and secured go to http://www.paypal.com, please get back to me with the following info, so that I can proceed with the payment at once.

I am glad to inform you that I have made the payment to your PayPal account and you ought to have received the payment confirmation from PayPal by now. I had a little problem with the mover they said they can only schedule the pickup date and time after they receive their money for the pickup fee via the Western Union Money Transfer. So l included $400.00 CAD that they charge for the pickup and $100 for the Western Union charges. Making total payment of $2,000.00 CAD PayPal will instruct you on how to get the money sent to my mover. The Western Union agent might ask you purpose of sending money at Western Union office, tell him or her you are sending it to a well-known friend or family because Western Union charges for friends and family are lower than the one for business or services. I hope you understand that, to avoid additional Western Union charges.The payment has been made and the money has been deducted from my account. Kindly get the shipping fee sent to the name and address below and send the details to PayPal email customer care for your total funds to be credited. I believe that since payment has been made, the advert should be taken off the site and please do let me know your free date and time so that I can give it to my mover for them to schedule the date and time they will be coming for the pick up in your location.

So this is where we learn the scam. They are sending extra money which I am the asked to pay to the shipping company by Western Union. I received an email purported to be from PayPal. It went directly to my gmail spam folder and included the warning "Be careful with this message. Lots of other people have marked similar messages as phishing scams, so this might contain unsafe content." The email is not very convincing. It includes this text:

Please Follow Procedure:
We wish to inform you that Diana Smith has made her intentions known to PayPal® that she will like $400.00 CAD to be sent to the recipient's address below.You are required to send the $400.00 CAD via Western Union Money Transfer.

All you have to do is reply directly to this email with the MTCN Number and the Sender's Name and Address plus the test Question and Answer used when sending the money through Western Union Money Transfer. Then you will receive a "Confirmation Email" from PayPal® Service informing you that your PayPal® account has been credited with $2,000.00 CAD as soon as the above information's has been received and Verified by us.

This payment has been deducted from the buyer's account and has been "APPROVED" but will not be credited to your account until the MTCN Number is sent to us for verification, so as to secure both the buyer and the seller.

IT is highly crucial at this point to let you know of your intention as regards the accomplishment of the Western Union transfer which as being the major reason slowing down this transaction or otherwise, legal action may be taken against you since you have not completed the transaction of Final Treatment on Accreditation of Your Account. The said fund can not be canceled or transferred back into her account. We believed you entered into an agreement by requesting money through PayPal, and by a non-compete, the transaction made to your account, you have violated the http://WWW.Kijiji.ca and PayPal agreement. However, the buyer has already emailed us in other to make a report about your negative response. We are ensuring to make PayPal a safer place, therefore we need to set confidence on our users. you are expected to bring this transaction back to live by cutting the MTCN# across to PayPal. failure to comply may lead to your account being VOID and SUSPEND your PayPal account and also your bank ACCOUNT.


We request for you to locate any post office and get the money send to the agent address and make sure you tell them that the money must be available for pickup, email the Scanned Receipt of the MTCN# issued to you at the Western Union outlet in less than few minutes as PayPal will remit the full fund into your account or otherwise, you will face the consequences of LEGAL ACTION as we have forwarded this case to our Law sector. we have already debited Diana Smith account and the money has been held by PayPal for the safety of both buyer and seller. This act was in compliance with the Section 4 Subsection 6 of the online-Banking Reform Agenda which gave grants to the security and safety of both buyer and seller. This implementation was compiled within other to protect both the seller and buyer. be informed that the said fee can not be refunded back to his account. it has been processed into your PayPal account and your account will receive the said fee after the completion of the Western Union transfer. At this time, your account is still yet to be credited but a total of $2,000.00 CAD will be on its way to your account after we have received the MTCN# from you. and for security reasons, you are expected to get back to PayPal with the $400.00 CAD so that your account can be credited.

If you do not have access to a scanner, You can email PayPal with the following details written on the receipt:

1. MTCN Number. (which is the 10 digit number on the receipt given to you at the Western Union store)
2. Sender's full name and address.
3. Text question and answer. (if any)
4. Amount sent.

Be informed that this transaction is only available and can only be tracked and traced via email, so do reply back to us if you have any question about the transaction and not via phone.

We are assuring you 100% safety, and as soon as the payment details are been emailed to us, total funds will be credited to your account.
