I am looking for a bit of help as i am selling a car on CraigsList. I have received 2 responses which are suspiciously similar. I am just going to cut and paste the 2 responses below, and hopefully some one can tell me if they are legit or if i should beware of these kind of responses.

Keep in mind i posted the selling price of $2200.

Hi Mate, i really like this car and i'ill be paying you $4,250 USD with my PayPal account because it's attached to my bank account and its safe and very secure way to make payment. If my mode of payment is accepted, send me your paypal address for me to effect the payment asap, once the payment has been made and confirmed by you, i will for my courier pickup that will handle the shipping thanks and get back to me asap.and for the repair i will be responsible for the repair and send me the total amount with the amount i asked for the car with the details of your paypal, once this is done i have a pickup agent that will come for the pickup of the car.

Thanks.

#2Thanks for the prompt response..I fully understand the condition of what i am buying. I'm ready to buy it now for my personal use but am not local and due to the nature of my work, phone calls making and visiting of website are restricted but i squeezed out time to check this advert and send you an email regarding it.Note that you will not be responsible for shipping and handling. My shipping company will come to your location for the pick up. Kindly provide me your name and full address so i can forward it to the shipping company to calculate the cost of pick up for me. And concerning the payment, i will prefer PayPal because i don't have access to my bank account online as i don't have internet banking but i can pay from my PayPal account because i have my bank account attached to it. I will also need you to give me your PayPal email address so i can make the payments immediately and if you don't have an account with PayPal yet, it is very easy to set up, go to http://www.paypal.com and get it set up, after you have set it up i will only need the e-mail address you use for registration with PayPal so as to deposit the fund. So get back to me with the following
details:

Your Full Name:
The Pick Up Address including Zip Code:
Your PayPal email address for the payment.

Thanks and in anticipation of your response.

Best Regards,

I'm sorry to say connan that they'e both classic overpayment scams.

They want to pay over the amount you're asking for, so that they can ask you to pay a third party (usually a fictitious shipper who is really themselves) by Western Union. By the time you discover that the confirmation of payment is from spoofed pay pal addies, and there's no money, they've gone off with the cash you sent.

There's no earthly reason for you to pay another party anything. Why can't he Pay Pal them ? That's the whole point. The only real money in the deal will be what you send the shipper, which is him. If you tell him to pay the shipper, he'll go away as he's not interested in anything else.

Whenever payment is requested by Western Union you're dealing with a scammer

I've just recently been scammed........and like you, they offered me more money ("to pay for shipping") and I took it. I've never sold anything before and was oblivious to scams/Nigeria. Wow, do I know better now. I am still getting scam emails on another posting I made on Craigslist saying I'D BEEN SCAMMED! What nerve!

My scammer used the same format as your first one. I also got 2 fake paypal webpages saying "she" was a verified buyer and the money would be there as soon as I sent the tracking number for the package, which I did. I am now out a very VERY nice ring and the money to ship it.

"She" is [email protected]

Here is who I sent the package to:
OJO OLADOTUN.O
1 ASO ROCK NEW SITE OKEOGA AJIBODE
OGUN STATE
NIGERIA

Beware. Scammers are the scum of the earth and are EVERYWHERE.

I got a very similar email response to my Craigslist ad for a motor scooter, even though I supplied a phone number to call. This time, the 'buyer' said he was 'at sea' but wanted to buy the scooter as a 'gift for my son.'

Because you mention it Hawker, I thought it would be good to share the link to the post. Here it is: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=52640&p=123406#p123406
