Craigslist, Ebay and other online buying/selling scams.

Hello! I have post a bed to sell online and [email protected] contact me through email and said he want my bed. However, he said because he is taking a trip, he can only pick up the bed later but he will pay in advance to and ask me to keep the bed.

Yesterday, he said he had asked his assistant to send me a money order to get the bed. But today, I got an email that he said his assistant sent a money order with a wrong and very large amount to me. He said he hope me to deposit this money order and keep the amount he supposed to pay for the bed but return the rest amount of money by purchasing a money order and send it to him.

However, he never told me his name and address. We did all the negotiate via email.

Is this a scam? What should I do next? If he really send me a money order, should I deposit it in my bank account and send him a money order?

I appreciate for your help!

Take any correspondence from these criminals to the post office for the postal inspectors .

hi and welcome to scamwarners, zzxxccvb ( that is a nice one finger username).
please post all of the emails you've had with this criminal, removing any of your personal info before you post it. This will warn others of the script he is using.

yes, it is a scam. its called an overpayment scam and you can find more about them here

like Britbrat7808 said, you will be held liable for the entire amount when it is proven to be fake, and could face criminal charges when you deposit it as well.

If a money order shows up do not deposit it. if it is delivered USPS, take it straight to the US Postal Inspector's office along with your evidence of fraud like T5 said. find your closest one here. https://ribbs.usps.gov/locators/find-is.cfm

you may also want to call your local police and see if the amount warrants them to get involved and see if they can find the person behind the fake check scam. Chances are good they'll say that you avoided the scam, therefore no crime..... but it would be wise to check with them anyhow. Just to keep your own records clean.
