Craigslist, Ebay and other online buying/selling scams.

I have had the following emails after I asked about the above car.

Hi George and sorry for the delay,
Here is my ad: http://cars.trovit.co.uk/listing/2002-p ... 3d4e079b1e I am a Training Safety Officer for the Gurkhas Training Team, currently deployed in Helmand, Afghanistan, as a part of a larger Nato team. The advert was placed locally, but I had to move the car to our base in Stafford, West Midlands, to keep it in a safe place. For the moment I don't have Network Coverage on my iPhone in this area. The car is still for sale in UK and if it’s OK with you, I’d love to arrange a test drive. I’ll look forward to hearing back.
Regards, Rebecca

I've signed the Amazon Prime's return policy, so your money will be insured and you will have the option to reject my car. You will not pay me first, Amazon Prime will provide a non-interest bank account, where you will secure the payment for my car. I can't access your money, Amazon Prime will forward the funds to me only if you'll confirm that you have agreed to purchase the car upon inspection.
I think is more than enough time to arrange the vehicle checks in the 5 days inspection period. If you find any issues with my car, you will have the right to reject it and the payment will be returned to you. In this case, I will pay the return shipping fee. Your payment is 100% covered with Amazon Prime's Terms and Conditions.
If you need more details please let me know. When you are ready please reply to me with your full name, address and your phone number,so I can start our transaction with Armor Payments Escrow. I've attached you a copy of my passport too.
Regards, Rebecca
P. S: Sorry for the bunch of information but I had to explain you the whole process since I am not able to talk on the phone at the moment.

I am guessing this is a scam???????

Help please.

Your welcome Donald . But please note . That passport image and the name are almost certainly stolen and not the image of the scammer . You can fake mark it as used in a scam though, this will help prevent them from reusing it .

I tend to specialise in UK fraudulent car sale adverts, specifically on Autotrader UK which I know are all being posted by the same 'group' and they have been operating for several years donald2155.

I wouldn't think this is the same 'gang' and I tend to think they may be of African descent for reasons I won't mention. Having said that, as these gangs/groups are all involved in widespread fraud I have little doubt that they share tools and are loosely linked.

The Porsche photos appear to have been copied from here, though I believe that the seller advertised the car in several places.

http://www.caricle.co.uk/detail/Used-2002-PORSCHE-911-CARRERA-4/SsoPZPPmTTTPmEEPSsP.html

I'll dig a little more and see what I can turn up.

The 'group' I deal with on Autotrader UK are quite sharp and change tactics frequently. This scammer isn't so bright to attempt to sell an ageing classic car and not think a buyer would want to examine it first. He's very much 'old school' in scammer terms.

This is an example of one of the Autotrader UK scammer's adverts

http://www4.autotrader.co.uk/used-cars/audi/a3/used-audi-a3-2-0-tdi-sport-3dr-south-ockendon-fpa-201604233280531?logcode=p

They remove registration numbers to try and make them harder to check up on, but I have a very good memory, and I recognise this as a well used set of photos.

There are several in Trovit. The clue is in the pricing to be honest. That 911 convertible on ebay at 7500 is just too low and if real would go on its first advert run.
Tks for the info. Look fwd to hearing more.

They nearly had me convinced as there really is a Gurkhas signal unit in Stafford!

If you read what he says carefully and check it out, little of what he says makes sense. I'm not going into detail because the risk is that scammers come here and can learn how to make their adverts more plausible.

As you say, the first giveaway is the price, and it's what I use to pick out scam adverts in the first instance, but because I report them and post them up here, invariably I locate where the photos have been taken from or connect them with other fake adverts posted by the same person as evidence that they are fraudulent.

It is unbelievable that anyone would post an advert to sell a vehicle and not make it available to be viewed. There is no planet in the solar system where this is normal practice, which is why scammers have to invent services that will safeguard your money and let you inspect the car at your leisure. Theoretically such escrow companies do exist, but I have never known one be used and actually undertake delivery themselves.

If you can't see and inspect a car before paying for it, simply walk away. There are plenty of other ways you can be scammed when buying a car, but to lose your cash without ever having seen the car is gut wrenching and happens all too frequently.

Reading through the original scam emails , there's a lot of grammatical errors in spots that indicate it wasn't written by anyone from an English speaking country . Sounds Russian / Romanian / Eastern European .

Just to mention one specific aspect of the scam

'Amazon Prime' is mentioned initially. From Google -

Amazon Prime- Enjoy unlimited fast delivery, exclusive access to movies and TV, ad-free music, and more.

It's actually a media delivery channel :=)

He then switches to 'Armor Payments Escrow' a California based and licensed company which is hardly likely to get involved in delivering your car to you in the UK, not that it is licensed to operate outside California and obviously not licensed to operate in the UK.

It is of no great significance, and most of the car advert scammers are of East European origin, but the style of using someone's passport photo to scam and waffling on with an implausible story about being in the army makes me think that this scammer may be originally from Africa. The East Europeans tend to be much more blunt and to the point. At the end of the day where they come from makes no difference and I keep tabs on styles simply because it helps me to identify their adverts.

The group I deal with use only two line generic descriptions for all their scam adverts in an attempt to prevent me searching out their adverts based on descriptions, which was easy in this case as they appear to have used the real seller's description.

The group I deal with have evolved into a much smarter line of operation, which is why I stick to them like glue, but I can still identify and report them.
