Ok, so on the 18th of Jan this year, I was pretty desperare for money. I am a freelancer, and was asked by a guy called Cameron Newman (CN) to help sell stuff on ebay for him. CN said that he was based in Edinburgh, he had a warehouse and sold stuff in cash, but didn't know how to use ebay, and wanted someone to help. He was very genuine and even offered for me to come to the warehouse to meet him and see what was being sold. So, I thought he was real. Then, I put the first item on ebay. A buyer bought it, but wanted to pay via card. So, he paid the money into my account, which I then passed over to CN. After this, I noticed that his bank details didn't resemble anything similar to his actual name, I became slightly suspicious. A week later, the item didn't arrive with the buyer. I began to panic. I contacted CN who said it was a mix up in deliveries, and was very apologetic and even offered the buyer a fifty pound refund for it, but the buyer simply wanted a full refund. CN said that he had refunded him. I then put another item on for him, which was also sold. The second buyer paid via paypal, but once he'd paid, CN disappeared. I then refunded that buyer because I couldn't get any information from him. A month later, I have had nothing from CN. Since the day that CN said he'd refunded the first buyer, I haven't heard anything from the buyer either. However, the past month I've been going crazy worrying that the first buyer was never refunded. He has my details on ebay, my email and my bank details, so surely he would have contacted me by now if he wasn't refunded? Surely something would have happened, he would have opened some sort of case by now? It's literally been no contact. I reported CN to ActionFraud and Trading Standards, but both said that it's a pretty dead case until the buyer actually does something.
I can't tell anybody about what happened, I feel so stupid and ashamed for falling for a scam
I've been desperately looking everywhere for reassurance, that if the first buyer takes action against me I can't be the one that's prosecuted and put in prison? I can't sleep or eat or think properly from the fear that I'll be put in prison for this, I'm only 19, I'm going to uni this year and I've never, ever done anything wrong. I've never wanted to be a criminal, nor have any intention of doing so.
Should I assume that he was refunded?
I have the full email thread between me and CN of him saying that it is all him, and I was just someone he hired. I also have CN's bank details and supposed address.
I'm so scared that I feel terrified to leave my house, answer any calls or check my emails. I don't want to be introuble for this. Can someone help me?
