Craigslist, Ebay and other online buying/selling scams.

I received a standard AutoScout24 request as to whether my car was still for sale from [email protected] Telephone Number: +1(502) 286-4957, I replied that it was. I then received the following replies:

1. "Thanks for your reply, am from USA but a friend of mine gave me the site where i saw your car, not that i can't buy a cheaper car here in USA but the last time i bought a car here in USA i never knew it was a stolen car which almost got me into trouble, so i promise never to buy from USA again before my friend gave me your site, cos that is where he has been buying his car without any problem, you don't have to worry about the shipment of the car cos i will be the one to arrange the pickup in your country, so i hope we make a great business.

Am really interested in the immediate purchase of the car, i will like to know how long you have owned the car, what is the body condition of the car and when last was it serviced, i will really appreciate it if you also send me more pictures of the car together with the necessary details of the car, and also to confirm i got a reply from the real seller i will also like you to get back to me with the price of the car, i mean the price you listed online with the car..... i wait for your response regarding the details i asked for regarding the car."

2. "Oh, what a nice car you drive, well am satisfied with the condition of the car and also agree with the asking price of the car, i will arrange a shipping company from here which one of there agent will be coming for the pickup, the agent will be responsible for the test drive of the car and also handle all the document concerning the car including the change of ownership and also signatures,i would have love to come see the car and pick it up myself, but due to my work as a soldier am currently in camp, and we won't be allowed to leave the camp till some months, the payment will be made by paypal, and once the payment is made and clear into your account then you choose a suitable date you want the agent to come for pickup,so get back to me with your paypal details so i can proceed with the payment, and if you don't have an account with PayPal, its pretty easy, safe and secured to open one. Just log on to http://www.paypal.com, I need you to provide the following details so that i can proceed with the Payment.

Your PayPal e-Mail Address :
Your Full Name:
Your Mobile Number
Full Address:
Total Cost of it:
Home Address:

Soon as i make the payment and you get the funds my shipping agent will come for the pick up at your home at your convenient time and date."

I then asked this guy to provide me with his Military ID to establish his identity. Since then I have not heard a word from him. Someone who buys a car for the asking price sight unseen is either a fool or a scammer.

Welcome to Scamwarners DonDave888

Yep - it's a standard scam and he isn't interested in your car at all.

He'll overpay you using a 'spoofed' Paypal message which makes it look as if he's sent you the money and he'll ask you to Wuxfer the extra money to the person he says is coming to collect your vehicle. That's where he intends to steal from you.

It doesn't make sense as he could pay the shipper as easily as you, but he has to do it that way because he can't steal from you otherwise. The bit that's clever is that he messes you about and relies on you being keen to close the deal and go ahead without thinking.

It's useful to know what email address he's using so that others can be warned. He'll send out hundreds of mails every day and hope to catch just a few.

CAR ADVERTS - If a car seller mentions escrow - he's scamming you Never ever for any reason pay anything until you have seen and inspected the vehicle
