Craigslist, Ebay and other online buying/selling scams.

Another variant of this scammers name / address

Jordan David / [email protected]

Replied regarding my current ebay (not autotrader - proving the scammer to be multi talented in spotting niche markets to attack) item without directly referring to exactly what it is.

Also set me on alert asking if the item was still for sale - considering it has obviously been browsing Ebay and come across the active listing....

Luckily I am always wary of scammers and their 'stories' so found this website as part of my caution.

Is there a way to report these scumbags or have them traced? This appears to be one individual chancing his / her arm with many variants of the same basic name set.

Oh and Hello from Shiftytigger - new to this website but glad to find it.

Just got a mail from WIlliam Bright, had previous ones from Gideon Woods. Common practice is to say they have paid by paypal but funds are being held until the shipping costs have been paid. Once paid the funds will be released. 2 words of warning - 1. any address with gmail is suspect and 2. any money request through Western Union is suspect. Put the two together and you have disaster.

Hello abbeylands and welcome to ScamWarners.

Could you please post the email addresses that your scammers were using, so that others may find them and avoid being scammed.

Please do not tell scammers that they are listed here - it will take them seconds to change their fake details and their new details will not be listed for any future victims to find.

by the way - excellent site. I run an art gallery and frequently get scam buyers asking for art - paying through credit cards. They have all the details but invariably when I ring the banks to get cleared funds the transaction is declined. As a word of warning - even on credit cards when you think they have been cleared - i.e. funds are in your account, there is a 120 day period when the card owner/bank can take the money back out of your account. So seller beware!! Nearly got caught with this one - funds in the bank - but thankfully was a little wary - another gmail address.

I've received basically the same email, here are all of the details

"Hello,
I am glad to inform you that i am satisfied with the details and conditions of your car on the advert.

Presently i am in offshore in France but i will be traveling down to UK to complete the transaction.Firstly, i will like you to please put it off advert to avoid interruptions from other interested buyers and count it sold.

Concerning the price ,i will be glad to pay you £18000.00.

I will  send you a Bankers draft of £5000.00 which i will allow it to clear into your bank account  .

You will  deduct £1000.00 as a  non-refundable deposit.

You will send  £4000.00 to  shipping agent asap the cheque  cleared into your bank account. I was  informed by him that, he will need the funds for shipping  in advance .The shipping agent needs to complete  the shipping document  and book a slot at the seaport before i will bet raveling down to UK.i don't want to be delayed in UK  due to my work.I would have love to send the payment  alone and get the extra issue out to the haulage company but it takes longer to get UK payment cash elsewhere and would cause delay in transaction as i believe we both don't want any delay in the transaction.

The remaining balance of £17100.00 will be payed into your bank account or by cash before it can be pick up.i will be waiting for 48hrs for you to confirmed the balance before the shipping agent can pick it up .Let me know the best way you want the balance to be paid?

i will be using a local haulage company agent to come and collect it from your location as they would be collecting some other items for me asap the balance has been confirmed by you .It will be shipped to SINGAPORE.the reason for this shipment method is as a result of the congestion at the Singapore seaport, which does not make it directly shippable there.

I will  compensating you with £100  for the time involve in paying the shipping agent and  also for you to withdraw the advert immediately you receive the deposit.

If you accept my terms of payment, get back to me with the NAME,ADDRESS AND CONTACT MOBILE  TELEPHONE NUMBER  for Bankers draft  to be delivered to you .I look forward to a successful transaction with you and await your urgent response.

PLEASE NOTE,ITS WHEN THE FULL PAYMENT HAS BEEN CONFIRMED BY YOU BEFORE THE  DOCUMENT WILL BE RELEASE TO ME AND SIGN

Hi All,
Thanks for posting your experiences here as it has helped me greatly. The latest name being used is D. Cox but the scam once again is word for word. I am going to contact the RCMP internet fraud taskforce today. However, not sure they can do much about it.
Below is the email train.
Cheers

Scammer!
Thanks for the prompt response, the price is okay by me,I am ready to buying it now for Birthday gift for my Dad and i am at sea at the moment as i am a marine engineer and due to the nature of my work, phone calls making and visiting of website are restricted but i squeezed out time to check this advert and send you an email regarding it. I really want the car to be a surprise for Dad so i wont let him know anything about the car until it gets delivered to him,i am sure he will be more than happy with the car. I insisted on PayPal because i don't have access to my bank account online as i don't have internet banking, but i can pay from my PayPal account, as i have my bank a/c attached to it, i will need you to give me your PayPal email address and the price so i can make the payments asap for the car and pls if you don't have paypal account yet, it is very easy to set up, go to WWW.PayPal.com and get it set up, after you have set it up i will only need the e-mail address you use for registration with PayPal so as to put the money through. I have a pick up agent that will come and pick the car up after i have made the payments.
Cheers...

Well John Templain ([email protected]) is showing his face again! I am SO thankful for this posting! We got an email this morning saying he was ready to buy - sight unseen - if we give a paypal account so he can transfer money. This is for a 1972 Impala we have for sale on craigslist.org. It makes me sick that it's all a scam after eamiling him for a week with details and pictures!!!
But wow am I glad I thought to Google his name before we proceeded!

Just posted an ad to sell a car. Received this message for "Don Cox marine engineer". Glad I found this site!

Hello All,
I'm dealing with two of this scam right now for the same vehicle.
One called itself as Yvonne Foster a marine biologist working at "sea" on St-Lawrence river in Quebec, Canada and buying for her son working abroad in Malaysia.
The other called itself as Kathryn Brandy, a marine contractor working at sea and buying for Dad!!
I've worked hard to sell my car by provide all additional pictures and such until the second one introduced itself as also working at sea; that's when I smelled a scam and such for more similar scam to prove myself right.
I have not reply to their offer to pay full asking price with paypal yet!!

Thanks for the prompt reply. My name is Yvonne Foster. I believe my son Paul sent you a text message to email me for the sale. I would like to know the lowest price, more pictures and its current condition because i can't come over to inspect it. I'm buying it locally here in Canada for my son studying/working in abroad (Malaysia). I work at sea as i am a marine biologist (I work on the St-Lawrence river in Quebec. my office: Pilotes du Bas-St-Laurent] and due to the nature of my work, phone calls are restricted. I can oly use my iPad to partially communicate. I am really sure he will be more than happy if i am able to purchase it from you because this is what he want and chose from the Advert.
You need not worry yourself about how it will get to him there in Malaysia as i have a contact of shipping company there that will be handling the pick up and all the paper work.

......

Thanks for the pictures and information, it was really of immense help,I am really interested in buying it and i want to go ahead with the purchase, i am pleased with the price but Thanks for the pictures and information, it was really of immense help,I am really interested in buying it and i want to go ahead with the purchase, i am pleased with the price but I can only conclude the transaction through PayPal for our own protection,PayPal act as a neutral third party. it is safe, secure and reliable.

I insisted on PayPal mode of payment because i don't have access to my bank account online as i don't have internet banking but i can pay from my PayPal account as i have my bank a/c attached to it and also due to the fact that i am currently offshore and I won't definitely be able to make it to my bank to wires money across to you.It is what safe and convenient for me.

......

Hi there,
Thank you for getting back to me.Can you assure me that the merchandise is in good state and that i will not be disappointed with it and I'm ready to pay your asking price. To be honest, i wanted to buy this for my Dad and he is a mechanic, but the issue now is I'm a marine contractor and i just got a contract which i am doing presently and the contract is strictly no call, due to the lack of reception on the sea area, But I'm able to access email anytime as we will make use of laptop so my only quickest payment option is PayPal as i can send money via PayPal anytime. Since I'm requesting this transaction to be done via PayPal, i will be responsible for all the pay pal fee/charges on this transaction and if you don't have an account with PayPal, its pretty easy, safe and secured to open one. Just log on to http://www.paypal.com. I hope we can make the purchase as fast as possible? I have a mover that will come for it once payment clears and they will be handling the title for me.So i look forward to hear from you soon.

Hi all,
Stumbled across this site after googling an odd looking email address: [email protected]
What a great site!
I am listing a caravan on ebay on behalf of a family member, they had received an email enquiry virtually the same as that received by byrdbite, Oil Rig engineer, buying for son's birthday gift etc..
Don't know what the scammers angle is, possibly quick payment by paypal and collection using a cloned/stolen card, false paypal link leading to the unwary entering financial details on a fake site or after victim sets up paypal account maybe the scammer tries sending a fake paypal email say funds received.
Whatever have nothing to do with them!
Keep up the good work, I shall return and post if I rumble others. 8)

Looks like he changed his name to Happy Williams. Selling my van and got the same reply as above except it's for his uncle. Awe....
additional info: first reply to ad was from [email protected] then he responded using [email protected].

Advice to people out there, don't post adds using the email address you use with your paypal account or any banking for that matter. It gives him/her that much more info to gain access to your money.

Hello, I just registered on this site to tell people of the two people that emailed me this morning and tried scamming me. Basically I am selling a TV on ebay and the bid is £1,800. A man called Andrew smith with the email of [email protected] and a Man called Mark smith with the email of [email protected] have both given me the same story that they are an enginear at sea and are buying it for their son as its his birthday...they will only pay through paypal as they cant do online banking while on the rig (what a load of crap) Mark smith has offered me £2500! yet he wont bid on ebay.. so I thought it was a bit strange and started looking into it which im glad i did! I was very pleased with someone offering me that much money! by the looks of it he is paying through paypal and then claiming the money back yet keeping the item.

Be aware of these sellers! I feel sorry for the poor people who fall for these scams.

hopefully this will help other people

watch out for any email ending with a number @Gmail.com.

They're probably not actually interested in your item.

What would probably happen is that you would get a fake email pretending to be from PayPal saying that you have received a payment and the scammer will include extra money to pay to his shipper. The email will say that payment is held until you have paid the shipper by Western Union transfer.

The shipper is a fake and they are just after stealing the shipping fee.

Please do not tell scammers that they are listed here - it will take them seconds to change their fake details and their new details will not be listed for any future victims to find.
