As a seller you neither need nor expect a convoluted piece of story telling as to why someone is buying your item.

That alone is a warning sign that you're dealing with a scammer.

The reason is to excuse why they have to use the particular method of payment that enables them to perform a fraud on you and why they can avoid contact by phone.

If they have internet access, which they must have to view your advert, then their excuses tell you that it's a scammer manoeuvering you in to position to be scammed.

I received a text messaged a couple hours after I posted an ad about my car for sale:

Classic one hollidawn and good for spotting the name. It is always a great clue. I guess you have heard of Micheal Jackson, the singer. This is an African scammer from the text you post.You will get a fake overpayment and a flurry of forged emails seeming to be from PayPal. One will be an instruction to send $$$£££ to fake courier for the costs of delivery. By the time you have sent the money and found out there is none, you will be out of pocket by that amount and scammer will have vanished over yonder hills.

I am an attorney in the U.S. and was recently contacted by a client regarding this scam. By posting here I am not providing any legal advice and this should not be construed as such. I am merely posting for informational purposes to help avoid this happening to anyone else. In the U.S. this scam should be reported to your state's attorney general office.

Luckily, I read the email chain and was extremely skeptical from the very start. 1) the guy was emailing yet couldn't call or deal with his "delivery guy" because he was offshore; 2) his grammar was horrendous for being a supposedly educated egineer; 3) he didn't haggle regarding the price at all; 4) what business only accepts payments for services via Western Union?; among others.

After warning him to not move forward with the transaction, I continued to research this scam online and came across this website. This site obviously confirmed my concerns and I was able to inform the client to pull out immediately and cease all contact with the person.

The emails are in reverse order of date and time received with most recent at top. Emails from my client have been redacted as well as the sale amount and any other potentially identifying information.

I am glad that the script rang alarm bells for you and you were able to assist your client. We are also happy you found this site helpful.

One reason the scammer does not want to talk on the phone is that you will here his accent and poor english. He is not offshore. He is more than likely in West Africa or Malaysia. He may be one of the few with a laptop. If not he is sitting in an Internet Cafe responding to 100's of online ads a day. He will send the same script to everyone. There are reasons why he wants the ad pulled fast and will not negotiate.

In the script you posted. The scammer does not want whatever your client is selling. He wants to steal your clients money. The person he asked for the money to be wired to is possible another victim of his. This victim believes he has an actual internet job receiving payments and forwarding them onto his boss (scammer). The other possibility is the receiver is a knowing mule.

As you can see the Paypal email is a fake sent by the scammer. You will want to also advise your client this same scam can be used with fake checks and money orders. In other situations a scammer may want what your client is selling (jewelry, electronics, cell phones and laptops. In this case the scammer will have the victim provide a shipping tracking number in order for Paypal to release the money. He is once again lying Paypal will not hold any funds. Any check or money orders will be fake. The bank may release the funds but days or weeks later the victim will be informed of bad deposit. This is where it becomes bad for the victim. The bank will have him/her repay the money, possibly close their account and report to Law Enforcement for Bank Fraud.

As for the payment..i can only pay via the fastest and secure way to pay online(PayPal) here.I have a private courier agent that will come for the pick up after the payment have been made ...so no shipping included and With the issue of my details,transferring the name of ownership and signing of all paperwork will be done by the courier services company agent so you don't have to worry about that.
You can now send me your PayPal email so i can pay in right away and also include your address in your reply.If you don't have a paypal account, you can easily set up one...log on to http://www.paypal.com and sign up its very easy... i would have loved to talk to you on phone but i work mainly offshore, our phone is down on the rig right now due to bad weather, that was why i sent you a text, i even wonder how my message deliver to your phone but for now we can only communicate through the same mailing channel.await your reply asap.
