Another one to be wary of: A friend of mine is trying to sell his car on Auto Trader and received the following email from [email protected]

i am interested in the advert of the car.
how is the present working condition?
how much is the last price.?

He got suspicious after having received a different email from [email protected] having responded to [email protected] first email asking if the car was still for sale. It was only after google search on this email address that scamwarners confirmed the suspicions so thank you.

"Hi,

Thanks for the response,i am so much interested in purchasing the car and am very okay with your price, but i will not be able to come and inspect it because I'm not in town presently,i would love to know it's present condition and the reason you are selling it.I will arrange for the pick up and delivery through my private shipping agent,so kindly get back to me with your PayPal account email address so that i can proceed with the payment as soon as possible.

Thanks and hope to read from you soon.

Regards,
Mercy "

Hi merlin21,

Yes as you've identified, both emails your friend has received are from scammers. The one from Mercy indicates using a shipping agent, which is a sure sign of a scam. The other just has all the traits of an African scammer in the language that it uses.

Please do not tell scammers that they are listed here - it will take them seconds to change their fake details and their new details will not be listed for any future victims to find.

Trying to sell a bike on Autotrader and all I get are these stupid "gmail" Paypal scammers.

Hello Seller,
Thanks for the prompt response. I am ready to buying it now for birthday gift for Dad and i am at sea at the moment as i am a marine engineer and due to the nature of my work, phone calls making and visiting of website are restricted but i squeezed out time to check this advert and send you an email regarding it. I really want the motorcycle to be a surprise for my Dad so i wont let him know anything about the motorcycle until it gets delivered to him, i am sure he will be more than happy with the motorcycle. I insisted on Pay Palbecause i don't have access to my bank account online as i don't have internet banking, but i can pay from my PayPal account, as i have my bank a/c attached to it, i will need you to give me your PayPal email address and the price so i can make the payments asap for the motorcycle and please if you don't have PayPal account yet, it is very easy to set up, go toWWW.PayPal.com and get it set up, after you have set it up i will only need the e-mail address you use for registration with PayPal so as to put the money through. I have a pick up agent that will come and pick the motorcycle up after i have made the payments.
Thanks.

Joe

Here's another:

Am okay with the condition and the price of the item. I want you to know
that I have a shipping company that will handle the shipping for me. Do send
me the contact address where the item is, so that I can confirm shipping
from my shipping company.

Also I will be doing the payment through PayPal. Do you have an account with
PayPal? If you do not have an account with PayPal, you can set up an account
with them at http://www.paypal.com

Thanks
Spencer[i]

I've had about 10 replies and all this type of idiots.

Sounds like my good old friend Walter Baker [email protected]. *sarcasm*

Thanks for your reply,my dad will like something like this, so for his birthday i am surprising him by buying this. I would have loved to come for the inspection myself but i am mostly away,am an engineer and i work offshore most of the time, needless to say, i wont be able to come myself. However I have a private courier agent that will represent me and come for the pick up after the payment has been made, they will handle issue of my details, transferring the name of ownership and signing of all paperwork will be done by the courier agent.

As for the payment,i can only pay via the safest and secure way to pay online i.e (PayPal) here, as i do not have access to my bank account online, but i have it attached to my paypal account hence my insistence on using pay pal to pay.If you don't have a paypal account, you can easily set up one at www.paypal.com and sign up its very easy. i would have loved to talk to you on phone but i work mainly offshore and our satellite server has been down due to the bad weather which restrict our calls, please get back to me!! i appreciate your time. Thanks

Hey guys got an Aussie here. I am selling my bike on a site called Bikesales and received an email from a gentleman called Michael Seay and his email was below. it is pretty much exactly the same situation as seen with the above posts.

"thanks for mailing back,am ok with the price and the
condition,am buying it for my vacation, because i'll be coming
soon from our rig as a mechanical engineer on a rig
offshore,i won't be able to come for the inspection due to
the nature of my work,i would have love to calling in person
but our satellite server has been down which restrict our
calls.i will be paying you through PayPal,pls get back to me
with you PayPal details so i can proceed with the payment
and contact the courier agent who will come to pick it up
and deliver it in my place.
Await your reply"

another email was sent after i didnt reply saying

"Hi I'm waiting for your mail for me to proceed with the payment"

have not proceeded :)

Cheers, Seth

Hi All,

I'm from Australia too and also have recently put my car up on carsales.com.au. This Michael Seay guy has scammed me too from [email protected]. Unlike many of you pro's I wasn't quite sure it was a scam until today when I received this:
I was just about to pay when i had this problem with the
pick up, my pick up agent says i will need to pay for the
pick up before they can schedule a pick up time, they
charged me $950 for pick up and delivery, and payments
for pick up made through them is made to their corporate
international headquarters which is in the united kingdom
and the payments is made through western union money
transfer, i will add the $950 to the money i will send
through paypal as soon as i have made the payments, i will
email you and let you know and please i will need you to
help me send the money to my pick up agent Hq in the UK
through western union money transfer, this can be done
from any post office ,there is always western union money
transfer section in most post offices(you can do it online as
well at (www.westernunion.com)...,i would have done it
myself but as i am at sea and didnt bring my credit card
aboard, i am a little incapacitated.I will appreciate your help
here.

Not a complete idiot so gathered that and looked into this a bit further. Thankfully this site came up! I'm guessing the best thing to do is just not reply now? Does it matter that i've already sent him a paypal invoice?
