Craigslist, Ebay and other online buying/selling scams.

The comment I made above about Finnish names applies to this one too. It is possible for a Nigerian (I can name one who isn't a scammer; I have two computers his company made) to be well educated and have a writing style hard to distinguish from that of one raised in England. Whoever wrote the email has not spent much time in Finland or with many Finns, whatever his native language is.

Hi
I approached this guy Robert Hamilton and also received exactly same information. He said he is in Spain as well as the car and can't deal in person. I'm spanished and replied to him in spanish offering to travel there to see the car and got all excuses in English then found this post...by then I told him to forget it.
I will report to Autotrader...if it is too good to be truth it's because it is...a scam.
Hope you can get your money back

I also very nearly got scammed by this person/persons! I emailed a '' Cathy '' enquiring about a Fiat 500C and this is what she emailed back.

Hello there,

I am glad to hear that you are interested to buy my 2011 FIAT 500C 1.2 LOUNGE CONVERTIBLE. Although I am registered in the UK,i recently moved to Cadiz, Spain (where my family is from) and the car is being shipped from here. I want to sell it in UK due to the fact that it's an UK version (right handed),it meets all UK standards.I bought this car from UK and It still has UK registration, so you won't have to pay any import and insurance fees. The car meets all United Kingdom guidelines so there will be no problem regarding UK Customs policy on receiving the car.The car is in perfect condition, the bodywork is immaculate,no scratches, dents or hidden defects as well as the interior in excellent non-smoking condition, never been implied in any accident and it is as advertised. The car comes with log book, HPI cleared, No finance. You will get from me the keys and all documents to register the car in you name.If the car is not how i described it, i will offer a full refund. It will be insured during transportation and for all Inspection Period that you will have ( 15 days ), will be delivered at your address in maximum 10 days. Final price is GBP 3,500 (the price includes shipping and insurance fees). The price is low because the car is right hand drive in a country where all cars are left hand drive so in the Spain is very difficult to drive this type of vehicle and nobody wants to buy it here in Spain.Instead of keeping it in garage (during this economical crisis), I decided to sell it to someone back in the UK for a really attractive price.

I want to take this opportunity to assure you that this deal is 100% legitimate, the deal will be manage by a very well company,in this way both buyer and seller are 100% covered during the steps of this transaction.
Let me know if you need any further details or if you would like to buy my car.

Thank you!

After reading this I emailed her again sharing my concerns about buying an unseen car online and this is what I got as a reply

Hello again,

I want to inform you the the car is in Spain and it will be shipped from here to UK.The shipper I will use will deliver the vehicle to your door, you don't have to pick it from the port. Shipping will take 10 days maximum. Due to the fact that i am located outside UK and we can not deal in person,i`ve contacted Google Wallet regarding this issue and they told me that they could offer to me a program that is created especially for international transactions that protects both of us. They agreed to supervise this deal.
You will send the funds to Google Wallet and they will keep the money until you receive the vehicle and test it.In this way both buyer and seller are 100% covered during the steps of this transaction. They will hold and insure your money until receipt of the car in good condition. That is how their service is working. As far as the seller concerns, i will be glad to know that Google Wallet is in possession of the funds during the delivery period.
You will be given a 15 days inspection period from the day you receive the car at home( i will ship it to your address insured for full value to you ).
If you decide to keep the car, then you will have to authorize Google Wallet to release the funds to me, and the transaction is complete. If the vehicle is not as described ( perfect interior, exterior, mechanical condition ), you will be able to send the vehicle back through the same shipping company ( return postage at my expense ), and ask Google Wallet to return the money to you.

If you want to check the car here are the reg details #:

Vehicle Registration Mark (VRM) OY61XED
VIN (chassis number) ZFA31200000751169
Manufacturer's Warranty 10/2014

If you want to read more about Google Wallet service please visit :
http://google.wallet.com-confidence.co. ... #how-works

If you want to get more info about their terms and condition please contact Google Wallet
using the blue button from the website ( CONTACT US )

If you wish to purchase it and agree to these terms i will need you to provide your full name and address. I will then notify Google Wallet and they will contact you to explain the entire procedure.

I will be waiting for your reply as soon as possible

Thank You!!

I later replied saying I do not wish to send my money to a third party ect.. and they replied

Dear friend,

i don't wanna sell my car but because of economical crisis i got some financial problem and i need this money asap so i can pay my fees quickly. That is why i drop the price a little so i can sell my car fast. i hope you understand my feelings and you will consider me as your friend.

If you are so suspicious about this transaction I would rather close this deal with other person than to know that you'll be very stressed hoping that I am a honest person, until you receive your car.Your peace of mind is a lot more important than this deal!!! I didn't ask you to send me the money,I wanted you to to send the money to Google and they will hold the money. They are the best guarantee that you get anywhere. If you decide not to go through with it there is no problem.I got quite a few offers left. Get back to me and let me know what you decide. Thank you for your time and interest

I researched people blogs and forums and came across this website and about this audi A1 and another car, after reading all the emails sent to other people with a different name and story but all the same language and details about the cars and the same written paragraphs about google wallet and to check the car out ect I realised it was all a scam and infact the same person writing all the emails to different people! If they didn't want to get caught out they should not use the same text and laungage. The cheek of some people, I don't know how they live with thereselves!!!

I hope this helped and stops anyone else from being scammed!

Welcome to Scamwarners Emmakear1.

The log book is unlikely to identify the scammer. He's probably obtained it from someone else by pretending to be a buyer and is now using it as part of his scam.

The main way to protect yourself is to never purchase anything you haven't viewed beforehand.

It isn't in the interests of ad sites to tell buyers this, as it would drastically reduce their turnover, but until they find a solution to the the overwhelming number of scams, there's no other way to protect yourself.

Laughably I have noted scammers taking details from posts by other scammers for their fake ads, and I bet they get a lot of dealers pestering them for their bargain vehicles. Some of the unintended consequences the scammers won't have foreseen.

CAR ADVERTS - If a car seller mentions escrow - he's scamming you Never ever for any reason pay anything until you have seen and inspected the vehicle

I've just found a recent scam and thankfully came across these forums. Sounds like it could be the same people as above. Although I'm sure there's more than one scammer of this type out there. The car I was contacted about was similar to the ones that I had been looking at on eBay but the reason I knew it wasn't one of the the ones I had been viewing was that it was an automatic. I'd only viewed manuals. Regardless of that the seller did seem genuine and the HPI check I ran on the car was fine - which proves that they don't cover everything!!
This turned out to be the [email protected] that has been scamming other people using other vehicles. She sent me reg number for the HPI and photos of a very nice looking Audi A4 Avant. On the HPI this car has an estimated value of £13,000+. And she contacted me out of the blue to offer it for £6,000. Needless to say there will be no money being transferred to these people from my bank account.

AVOID [email protected]!!!!!!!

A big thanks to this site. You've saved me £6,000

Welcome to Scamwarners LuckyAvoid.

There appear to be two main scripts doing the rounds for this scam - the soldier on the isle of Man and the person located in a remote part of Scotland, and they appear to be very limited in being able to vary what they say, suggesting that those sending the e-mails are not English speakers and are just the 'foot soldiers' doing as they're told.

If you have any links to Ebay to show what accounts they might be using it would be very interesting to see them.

This is an example of one of the follow up mails, Originally his advert said the car was in Hyde Park.

Probably you are wondering why i am selling it for such a low price. I bought the car from my current employer, but I'm now working overseas every week and the car sits in car park or on drive all week doing nothing and I feel it's a waste - it's genuinely a lovely car, but we have 2 other cars so I don't think we'll replace it.

I live in Wick, Scotland. In case you can not come here in Scotland then i can bring the car to your home address and i will pay the shipping myself. The delivery will take max. 48 hours. I propose to close the deal using eBay under their Buyer Protection Program, as a third party which will guarantee to both of us a secure transaction. Since they are the biggest and the most trustworthy online market place.

Do you wan to explain you more about the Buyer Protection Program ? You will have 7 days to check the car before any money reach my account .

hi i contacted someone on e-bay about a car that was advertised and i got an sms instructing me to contact the seller by e-mail at [email protected], i checked out the e-mail address on line and found out it is a scam , i will be reporting the ad to e-bay.

Could you post the SMS and enough information so that we can write to Evelyn and be likely to get a response? We need the response as evidence to kill the domain.

Welcome to Scamwarners HollyG84 and we're delighted that we could assist you to avoid this scam, and there's no doubt that's what it is and it's caught out a lot of people, and if the scammer gets your money it's gone for good.

Google wallet isn't an escrow service and it doesn't work outside the USA for this type of transaction. Mainly you'd use it to buy items from online stores. The scammer will send you a lot of spoofed mails telling you that your transaction is secure - which it isn't. You won't be using Google Wallet at all, and you wouldn't be able to use it anyway.

In what countries is Google Wallet available?

You can use Google Wallet in stores, online, and to send money in the United States. Outside of the United States, Google Wallet is available to purchase on Google Play in over 125 countries, and to purchase online in over 160 countries and territories.

If you can't view a vehicle first, never ever even consider buying it. There are too many scammers on ad sites to risk it.
