Robert Lucas - Car Scammer

I had exactly the same thing last week! I had my car on gumtree and i got exactly the same emails from "Paul Nelson" and Paypal! Im so glad people have posted these things, i KNEW there was something dodgy going on! He had the same courier company and everything. Wanted to report it but not sure who are the proper authorities to go to, if possible, any suggestions??

sadly, there is little your local law enforcement will be able to do. The scammer is working from an internet café somewhere in Africa where police are corrupt and couldn't care less.
Reporting him to the auction site will result in getting him banned - and within minutes, he will create a fresh identity which is not in our data base to be found by Google.
The best way to stop scammers is to raise awareness: Talk to your friends, write a letter to your local newspaper ... anything that might pass on the information.

And I received this gem just this morning in response to my car for sale on Craigslist in Oklahoma City.

Same exact thing tonight via OKC Craigslist. I'm not sure how this scam works but I'm glad I Googled the email address and found this info. He's still trying as of July 9, 2011. Beware of [email protected]

As for the method of the scam:
The scammer creates a fake PayPal email address. From this he sends you an email claiming that the payment has been made but is being held "in escrow" until the item has been received and approved for. Then the amount "will be credited to your account". There will be a fake "shipping company", again created by the scammer who will tell you that he has added the shipping fee to the amount he paid to PayPal and that you are to pass on this fee to the shipping company via Western Union or MoneyGram.
So, the scammer is not interested in what you are selling but in the overpayment you are to send to his other identity, the shipment company. That is why this type of scam is called "overpayment scam".

I was just about to make the payment when i had this little problem
with the picking up,I got an email from my agent..i thought i included
that in my previous email.he said he won't come and pick up the item
unless i pay him the agent commission fee first in order to be able to
schedule a pick up time ,and my pick up agent head quarters is in the
US and all commission payments made for pick up, from
anywhere in the world is sent to their head quarters in the US and the
only form of payments they accept is western union money transfer and
i tried to pay online but i will need a credit card which i didn't
bring along, and there is no post office(there is usually a
westernunion section in most post offices) or any western union agent
offshore! so i have to ask you to help me with the pick up fees, i
will include the $500 they charged to pick it up and take it my
home(1st class treatment), to the payments i will send through paypal.
After i have made the payments and it has been confirmed by paypal, i
will need you to help me send the $500 to my pick up agent through
western union money transfer, the western union money transfer can be
made at a post office near to you,there is always a western union
