Craigslist, Ebay and other online buying/selling scams.

Hi!

I found this site through a search on Google where I took part of the body of a suspicious email response to my Craigslist advertisement. Thanks for the site! I probably wouldn't have followed through with the transaction, but now with the confirmation here, I won't and I hope the info below can help someone else too!

Fred

I just received an inquiry and response which is almost identical to the versions posted here. I'll paste the initial and response below:

From: Joe Bobby [mailto:[email protected]]

Interested in your item,is it still availaible???

Then "his" reply to my confirmation email:

Hello,
Thanks for your prompt responds, However, i will need your name and
address for payment,As am only able to make payment by money order at
this time b/c i am away on assignment. It will be nice if you can send
me more pictures. It will take about 7days for payment to get to you.
As per pick-up, I will make arrangement for the pick-up after payment
has been received by you. I don't mind adding thirty dollars so you
can keep it in my favor. Please take the posting off Craigslist today
and consider it sold to me, Include your phone number...
Expecting to hear from you soon.
Regards
Joe Bobby.

The part of the email I used for my search term was: "I don't mind adding thirty dollars so you can keep it in my favor. Please take the posting off Craigslist today and consider it sold to me"

I was a bit suspicious from the start, but when he offered to pay me extra (during a recession! :laugh-s:) I pretty much knew it was a scam.

Hi again,

While typing my last reply, I got another email about the "item", see below:

From: danku baba imole [mailto:[email protected]]

IS YOUR ITEM STILL AVAILABLE???

Hi Fred - best to delete and ignore these scammers. Once again your post will alert and save others.

Thank You.

Craigslist advice here http://www.fraudguides.com/internet-craigslist-scams.asp

More red flags to watch for here;

Here's some recent emails (from different email addresses) I got after posting a camera on Craigslist:

"Hello seller,
is your item still available for sell"

"Let me know if you still have it for sale?"

"is this item still for sale?"

"is your item still for sale?"

"Is this your only property?
Hope to hear from you."

These people didn't read the ad-- they have a standard email they send all ads. If you respond, then they'll respond with something like:

"Thanks for the swift response,Just to let you know that i'm buying this item for my partner overseas and i'll be adding $150 for the shipping and handling.I really wish i could do this transaction locally but am presently out of town due to my work frame.....Do get back to me with your PayPal account email address so i can make the payment immediately...I'm doing this very fast because i have promised my partner that the item will be there soonest."

Hello Kate! Yes, I will not reply to the second one. Good advice. Have a great day!

Depending on how much selling you do on Craigslist, you may want to set up a word filter on your email account. Having it delete all emails with the key phrases that The Enchantress posted would greatly cut down those sort of replies.

If you're not selling much, then don't worry about it.

I got an email from Shina Ayo at email [email protected]. Wants to buy an item from me on Craigslist. He was even going to add and extra $50. Sure I gave him the name, address, and phone number he requested. He over nighted the check. What he didn't know was I gave him a ficticious name, the address and phone number for our police department. He actually sent the check out and sent me a tracking number. I was amazed to see that the check actually arrived at the police department. I laughed my butt off. He emailed me wanting to know where his money was. I guess the only thing he got was out the bucks to over night the bogus check to our police department. I scammed the scammer. Also got one from Stanford Jones at [email protected]. I called the FBI they said they only get involved when there $5000 involved. Do not cash any check you get solicited for on any site. They are bogus checks and will only hurt your pocket. I get these emails all the time.

Hi Just Me

Welcome to Scamwarners

I am happy to hear that you are able to spot these scams and avoid being conned by them.

What you have done is you have scambaited them, if you have an interest in this please visit our sister site where they can teach you how to do it safely without effecting any innocent third parties.

We do not recommend giving scammers any real address details, even the police, by having it sent to the police you are effectively taking up their time and resources, they will not understand where it came from and will not realise the check is fake without themselves which will tie up more time and create more confussion for them.

Sad but true, few local police are aware of how these scams work.

Here's the e-mail

Hello,

Thanks for your interests in the position, I will deeply appreciate all genuine efforts to help me monitor and keep up to date with all my activities.

I have had a previous PA who has been very commendable in her activities and who has been part of my life for the past 6 months, she has since returned to her country. I sincerely hope I will be able to find someone again who will be as efficient as she has been.

I'm Mr.Adam Smith, 42, originally from Australia, but I have spent a whole lot here in Canada. I'm a lawyer by profession and I have been pretty successful in a handful of ventures I get involved in; from the Angel Investment Network in Canada and United State to various welfare and community service programs, I most very often get my hands occupied, so it is imperative for me to have a worthy assistant who can monitor and keep me up to date with my activities.

As my assistant, your activities amongst other things will include;
*Running personal errands, supervisions and monitoring.
*Acting as an alternative telephone correspondence when I'm away.
*Making regular contacts and drop-offs on my behalf.
*Handling and monitoring some of my financial activities.
* Receiving of packages and sending them out by FedEx account.
*Receiving and Processing my tax return Payment.

Basic wage is $300 a week

This position is home-based and flexible, working with me is basically about instructions and following them, my only fear is that I may come at you impromptu sometimes, so I need someone who can be able to meet up with my irregular timings. There is also a very sensitive issue on trust and accountability which I believe will resolve itself as time goes on. This is only an introductory e-mail, as time goes on we should be able to arrange a proper meeting to get things started officially.

I'm currently in the Queensland Australia now for a summit, however, I do have a number of things you could help me with this week if you will be available for me. This can act as a stable foundation to our working relationship.

Hope to hear from you again.

Cheers.

I have posted my opening for a job and this guy sends me this stuff, hahahaa what a moron!
But watch out for this IF your looking for a job, he'll probably send you a paycheck and you'll get scammed.
It's really pathetic that people are scamming others to get money like this while the economy is in the shape it's in. I usually don't post stuff like this, but the way people are hurting for money these days, well I just don't like to see people get hurt that can barely pay their bills and get a small amount of food for themselves and their kids!

Yet another scammer from Craigslist responding to a posting.
The response was just too weird to be believable.

Senders email: <[email protected]>

Hello,

I really appreciate your response to my email. I want you to consider
it sold, please do withdraw the advert from CL to avoid disturbance,
anyways I don't have time to come over to take a look because of my
Business but you don't need to bother yourself with the shipment, I'll
take care of that by engaging the services of a mover, hence I'll be
sending a certified cashiers check and it will be delivered to you
Asap, so I'll need you to provide me with the following information to
facilitate the mailing of the check.

Full name to make the check to
Full Physical address to mail the check (N.B UPS does not deliver to a
P.O box addresses.) City, State and Zip Code
Home & Cell Phone to contact you.

Note that the payment will be mailed to your address via UPS NEXT DAY
AIR SERVICE and I will like you to know that you will not be
responsible for shipping i will have my mover to come over as soon as
you have cash in hand

Sincerely Ben
