Hi there,

I have received a very similar email from a James Rodney see below:

I will pay 1600 for the car which also include shipping, so you should email me your paypal account id or process the money request so i would be able to submit payment for the car asap i will pay all paypal charges to ensure that you receive full payment.
i am willing to proceed with the transaction now, i am buying the vehicle as a birthday gift for my son and i am at sea at the moment as i am a marine engineer and due to the nature of my work, phone calls making and visiting of website are restricted but i squeezed out time to check this advert and send you an email regarding it. I really want the vehicle to be a surprise gift for my son so i wont let him know anything about the vehicle until it gets delivered to him, i am sure he will be more than happy with the vehicle. I insisted on paypal because i don't have access to my bank account online as i don't have internet banking, but i can pay from my paypal account, as i have my bank a/c attached to it, i will need you to give me your paypal account name, email address and your final asking price so i know how much i am transferring in order for me to proceed with the payment or you could just login to your paypal account if you already have one and use the request money button at the top of your paypal account home page and send the payment money request invoice to my paypal account which is [email protected] so that i can send payment to your account asap for the vehicle and pls if you don't have paypal account yet, it is very easy to set up, go to http://www.paypal.co.uk and get it set up, after you have set it up i will only need the name on the paypal account and e-mail address you use for registration with paypal so as to get the money transfer into your paypal account or you could just use the request money button at the top of your paypal account home page and send the payment money request invoice to my paypal account which is [email protected] so that i can send payment to your account asap. I have a pick up agent that will come and pick the car up after i have made the payments...
I will also appreciate it if you could email me some pictures of the vehicle.
You can ring me on +447024079780 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting              +447024079780      end_of_the_skype_highlighting begin_of_the_skype_highlighting +447024079780 end_of_the_skype_highlighting if i am chanced to receive your call, i will do.
Thanks.

I foolishly emailed him from my paypal account requeting an invoice. I got back this email below:

Dear Removed - Ralph
You have received a PayPal Payment of £1,600.00 GBP from James Rodney ([email protected]).

As mentioned in the receipt of Payment and as per New PayPal Payment policy, we have fully debited the total amount (above) from the buyer's account which includes the buyer's shipper's pick up fees.

In order to complete this transaction and get the funds approved in your account. We advice you go to nearest Western Union Office, and send the £5,00.00 GBP to the Agent and send us a Scanned Copy/Photograph of your Western Union Transaction Receipt (in .JPG Format).

NOTE: This is important as a security measure to ensure safety of this transaction.

Please, find below the name and address of the Transport Agent where the Funds would be sent via Western Union Money Transfer.

I got my brother to check out the emails and directed me to this page. So I’m defiantly being scammed! fortunately I have not paid this man any money and I have cancelled my paypal account. I have also altered the fraud team at paypal. I hope this will help anyone else who is being scammed by this person. I have also been warned that paypal is not as secure as first thought. When selling a car insist on cash only!

Hi Alex, the scammer in your case is not necessarily the same scammer but there is a very good chance that it is.

You have taken all the right steps so far, just continue to ignore any further attempts to contact you and eventually he will go away.

We prefer people to remain anonymous for their own safety (except scammers) so if you could send a PM to Jillian our Administrator with an alternative username she will be able to get you sorted.

Dont hesitate to ask if you have any questions.

Please pass on our thanks to your brother as well, it always gives us a lot of satisfaction when people are saved from being scammed after reading the information posted here.

Welcome Alex,

Glad you were able to avoid being scammed! This type of scam is increasingly common these days.

Just one thing I want to make clear for readers of this thread, though--in general, this particular scam has nothing to do with paypal security, and closing your paypal account is not typically necessary from a safety perspective (though it may save you from future harrassment anyway), unless you actually clicked a link from a scammer and typed in your password (though many of these scammers don't have spoof sites--many operate by email only).

The scammer was never in your paypal account (or any paypal account for that matter)--he actually hasn't used paypal for anything in this scam. All he has done is created a fake paypal email, sent it from an anonymous free email account, and spoofed the paypal return address. It only takes a few minutes to do--if I had your email address, I could do the same thing myself!

If you were to log into your paypal account the way you normally do (never follow an emailed link unless you are 110% certain it is really from paypal, and even then, you really should just type in paypal's address) you will find no reference to this "transaction." If you asked why it didn't show up, he would undoubtedly give you some explanation related to the "hold."

Whenever you get a paypal payment email, you should go to paypal yourself (again, WITHOUT following links in the email), and verify that the transaction shows up in your account. This step alone will reduce the odds of you being scammed by more than 50%.

transaction and send any pictures you like as long as i know this is 100% real, and i'm

Hi Deki and Welcome to Scamwarners.

I am glad that you have stopped by with this information before sending any money, as you have suspected it is a scam and there is no doubt about it.

Any mention by a buyer to use a shipping agent will be a scam, the scammer will pay you by using a fake cheque or a more recent trend of sending a faked paypal email telling you that you have received payment for the car as well as the deliveery fee which you will be asked to forward on to the shipper.

The scam here is that the Shipper is actually the same scammer who is "buying" your car so any money you send will be back into his hands and you would never see it again.

The scammers generally dont give up on the prospect of getting more money from you and may further suggest that you will need to pay additional fees until such time as you realise you have been scammed.

Please ignore any further attempts to contact you, by all means feel free to post them here with your own details removed but under no circumstances should you further communicate with this scammer with one small exception, if you want to and feel you must reply a simple email telling the scammer;

"The car is now sold locally,
Thank you"

No more, no less and regardless of any other emails texts or calls you receive on the matter, ignore them.

Thank you for taking the time to post, by doing so you will help others who find these details in the future.

If you have any questions, please dont hesitate to ask

I also seemed to have almost been suckered in by the same scam. Similar story to the rest of you actually. I really didn't want to believe it because I really need the money, but a friend convinced me to look into it and now I'm very annoyed. Here is the email address used for this one; [email protected] The person went by the name Dave Samson.

Hi Katherine

Welcome to Scamwarners, I am sure you already have but please do pass on our thanks to your friend.

In Australia recently there have been a couple of articles on one of the current affairs type shows featuring this same scam, hopefully with enough awareness people will be aware of these scams and avoid losing money to it.

Please do talk to your family and friends, by talking about it you will be playing your part in reducing the number of potential victims out there and will save others from being scammed.

If you have any questions, please ask

Hi, thanks for the swift response. I am actually buying this for myself and will want the shipment handled by my shipping agent but no worries as i am going to be responsible for the shipping bills. The item is going to be picked up by my agent after i have made the full payment via pay pal. All i will need is paypal account email so that i can remit the funds into your account as soon as you email me your agreement to this process. Hello,
I just want to inform you that i have just completed the payment and i hope you must have been notified in your email about the payment i made through PayPal, you can check your e-mail for confirmation of payment, I have just make the payment of $7,900.,i have decided to add the amount of $1,100 which i paid through paypal, So please i will like you to help me wire the sum of $1,000 online to my agent via western union so he can be able to come for the pick up and also paypal said they won't release the funds until they get the western union information from you due to the fact that i emailed them about the excess payment i made.i will need you to send the $1,000 to my pick up agent Headquarters where they normally confirm any commission payment to via western union money transfer(this can be done from the post office,or online at http://www.westernunion.com) as they usually have a western union agent there) , i added extra $100 to cover the western union charges which shouldn't be more that $60-75 but just to be sure i added $100, Here is my pick up agent Headquarter info needed to get the money sent through western union money transfer

Please kindly email the necessary details to paypal :the mtcn which you will be given at the western union after the $1,000 has been sent as well as the sender's name and address used to send the money through western union,so i can forward it to paypal or better still you can email it to paypal directly.

After i have made the payments and it has been confirmed by paypal, i will need you to help me send the $1000 to my pick up agent through western union money transfer, the western union money transfer can be made at a post office near to you, there is always a western union agent in most post offices or online at http://www.westernunion.com .I will be making the payments shortly and will email you as soon as it has been done..

Martin Paul <[email protected]> wrote:

ok no problem i will be paying you with my PayPal account because it's attached to my bank account and its safe and very secure way to make payment. I have a private courier agent that will come for the pick up after payments has been made, so no shipping included. Hi MJJ

Welcome to Scamwarners.

I have removed a lot of your personal details, if you could please take a look through your post to make sure i have left anything that could lead to you, while it is highly unlikely the scammer will end up on your doorstep, if he was to threaten physical harm it isn't pleasant when he can find out where you live.

Thank you for posting the details, I am glad you have realised before losing any money, please be on the look out for other scams, now that this scammer has gotten close he is likely to try again, perhaps using a differenet type of scam next time.

If you have any questions, please dont hesitate to ask

UAB"Kuršiu Linija"
Owen Bloom
#112, Moarville Road, Speke,
Liverpool,L70 1AB

Scammer goes under the name of Nev Holmes and uses the following email ([email protected]).

The email that he uses to send on PayPals behalf is "[email protected] <[email protected]>".

Unfortunatly i did fall victim (rather emberassing really), so im gonna bait him good for it now!

Hope this keeps others safe in the future!

Thanks for the prompt response.. I am ready to buying it now for my Brother in-law and i am at sea at the moment as i am a marine engineer and due to the nature of my work, phone calls making and visiting of website are restricted but i squeezed out time to check this advert and send you an email regarding it. I really want the goods to be a surprise for Brother in-law so i wont let him know anything about the goods until it gets delivered to him, i am sure he will be more than happy with the Product. I insisted on paypal because i don't have access to my bank account online as i don't have internet banking, but i can pay from my paypal account, as i have my bank a/c attached to it, i will need you to give me your paypal email address and the price so i can make the payments asap for the goods and pls if you don't have paypal account yet, it is very easy to set up, go to www.paypal.com.au and get it set up, after you have set it up i will only need the e-mail address you use for registration with paypal so as to put the money through. have a pick up agent that will come and pick the goods up after i have made the payments...
Thanks

Hello Mate,
why the western union money transfer delay i guess you should understand that my account has been placed under limited access for me not to be able attempt in claiming the funds back into my account without any legal notification for security purpose.i have check my paypal account again and again and it shows that the money as been deduct from my account to your account but before the money show up in your account you need to make the transfer for my agent to complete the transaction so that you can have your money fully credited into your account with immediate effect
