Good Morning all,

I am based in the UK, London and have my Audi S8 listed on the UK Autotrader. I have just received a very similar scam message from a chap who calls himself John Waters [email protected]. The mobile number he gives out is +447035955287. As I have received numerous scam messages in the past I thought of googling the name and number and came accross this site and its various posts. Initially the first enquiry I have received is:

Customer Details:
NAME: MR john
TELEPHONE:
EMAIL: [email protected]

Vehicle Details:
MAKE: AUDI
MODEL: S8
PRICE: £29995

Message:
Its your still available for sale.Let me know you current price ?

To Which I replied:
Dear John,

Thanks for your enquiry. Yes the car is still available. Price wise I would be willing to accept in excess of £28,750
Regards
Julien

Following that he send this bs:
Hello,
I am glad to inform you that i am satisfied with the details and conditions of your car on the advert.

Presently,i am in Italy for an assignment and am planing to relocate to Singapore. i will travel down to UK and complete the transaction.Firstly, i will like you to please put off the advert to avoid interruptions from other interested buyers and count it sold.

Concerning the price and my terms of payment,i will be glad to pay you £28200.00.

I will send you a Bank cheque of £5000.00 which i will allow it to clear into your bank account .

You will deduct £1000.00 as a non-refundable deposit.

The remaining £4000.00 on the deposit will be sent to the shipping agent asap the cheque cleared into your bank account. I was informed by him that, he will need the funds for shipping in advance .The shipping agent needs to complete the shipping document and book a slot at the seaport before i will be traveling down to UK.i don't want to be delayed in UK due to present situation.i am trying to relocate to Singapore.I would have love to send the payment alone and get the extra issue out to the haulage company but it takes longer to get UK payment cash elsewhere and would cause delay in transaction as i believe we both don't want any delay in the transaction.

The remaining balance of £27300.00 will be payed to you,by cash or bank transfer before the car can be pick up.i will be waiting for 48hrs for you to confirmed the balance before the shipping agent can pick it up .Let me know the best way you want the balance to be paid?

i will be using a local haulage company agent to come and collect it from your location as they would be collecting some other items for me asap the balance has been confirmed by you .It will be shipped to SINGAPORE.the reason for this shipment method is due to congestion at the Singapore seaport, which does not make it directly shippable there.

I will compensating you with £100 for the time involve in paying the shipping agent and also for you to withdraw the advert immediately you receive the deposit.

If you accept my terms of payment, get back to me with the NAME,ADDRESS AND CONTACT MOBILE TELEPHONE NUMBER for Bankers cheque to be delivered to you .I look forward to a successful transaction with you and await your urgent response.

PLEASE NOTE,ITS WHEN THE FULL PAYMENT HAS BEEN CONFIRMED BY YOU BEFORE THE DOCUMENT WILL BE RELEASE TO ME AND SIGN

John.

If your watch these emails his name will be inconsistant and you will see many different free email services being used. They try to scam so many people that they lose track of exactly which name they were using when they talked to you. They also refer to your car or the thing you were selling as "the item." This is due to the fact that they use a form email that they re-use for different scams.

Ok so I'm a Brit in Vancouver, BC and about to return to the mother land and I appear to have been nearly nailed with this same scam by a chap called Pete (Peter?) Doyle. I won't repeat all of the email drivel that other users have obviously received and pointed out already (there's plenty of info on this thread so far - I actually found my way here by googling a whole sentence of the scammer's email after his email address didn't show up on a web search).

However in case anyone gets hit by the same bloke (or bird I guess) his email address is: [email protected]. He actually initially got in touch with me by phone and the number is: 863 216 8492 - a number in FLORIDA!!! (which I evidently should have spotted straight away!). I have no idea how this a*sehole makes money like this but I wish them all the worst in their endeavours...

Anyway it looks like I'm gonna have to give my car away but I'd rather do that than give one cent to this git!

Going to have some fun with him before mugging him off - the warning about not educating them duly noted.

Thanks Bryon that's great. Your lead-on/bait warning was a bit late as I already sent him a message saying I could only take cash as I was a convicted fraudster myself!! Ah well, he hasn't got back to me.

Also I woke up this morning to another enquiry from a St Matt Clinton ([email protected]). This time the scammer messaged me from his Texas number 972 532-3729. He obviously thinks I'm thick. Looks like I'll just give the car to charity or something... Really glad I went to the bother of posting it on Kijiji.

Don

Answer nr. 2:
Hey, The response I have just received from my private courier was that, they won't be able to come pick up unless i pay them the upfront commission fee of $850 first in order to be able to schedule a pick up time and date, and my private courier headquarters is in the CHINA and all commission payments made for pickup, from anywhere in the world is sent to their head quarters in the China and the only form of payments they accept is Western Union Money Transfer.

I will add the said $850 to the money I will send through PayPal Account to your bank account. As soon as I made the payment and you receive the confirmation of payment from PayPal, , please I will need you to help me send the money to my pick up agent Hq in china through western union money transfer. This can be done from any western union post office, as there is always western union money transfer section in most post office.

I would have done it myself but there is no post office on the ship and i tried to pay online (http://www.westernunion.com) but i will need a credit card which i didn't bring aboard the ship, and there is no post office(there is usually a western union section in most post offices) or any western union agent on sea! so i have to ask you to help me with the pick up fees, I'm a little incapacitated....I will be making the full payment as soon i read back from you. I will appreciate your help here....

Thanks for been nice and considerate about this.

Don

Hi, I just want to inform you that i have just completed the instant payment, i hope you must have been notified in your email about the payment i made through PayPal, you can check your email Inbox or Junk folders for confirmation of payment and to confirm your payment, I have just make the payment of $3,250, i have also decided to add the amount of $900 which i paid through PayPal, so you can now send $850 to my private courier agent via Western Union so he can be able to come for the pick up. I will need you to send the $850 to my private courier agent Headquarters where they normally confirm any commission payment to via Western Union Transfer, i added extra $50 cover the western union charges which shouldn't be more that $20-40 but just to be sure i added $50, Here is my private courier agent Headquarters info needed to get the money sent through western union transfer:

First Name: YUJIA
Last Name: MA
Address: Central North Fourth,
City: Beijing,
State: Beijing,
Zip Code: 100027,
Country: China.

Please kindly email the necessary details to PayPal :The MTCN Number, which you will be given at the western union after the $850 has been sent and also mail PayPal the sender's name and address used to send the money through western union as well... Awaiting for your swift response asap.. Thanks !!

I got nearly the identical scam from 'Lisa Lamb' ([email protected]) alias 'Dana A Kreis-Glencer' as follows:

From an autotrader ad:

Message:
Do you still have this listed Vehicle available for sale? Lisa.

I responded yes, then received this:

Thank you for getting back to me,can you assure me that i will not be disappointed if i buy this Vehicle as a Birthday gift for my Dad? as I'm ready to pay your asking price but not cash in person because I'm an Oceanographer and i am presently on a contract which will end in couple of months, the contract is strictly no call due to the lack of reception on the sea area, but I'm able to access my mail through my laptop and my only quickest payment option is PayPal,its safe fast and secure and i will be responsible for the pay pal transaction charges so you can get your expected amount.
If you don't have an account with paypal, its pretty easy to open one,Just log on to http://www.paypal.com and sign up.I hope we can make the purchase as fast as possible? as my Dad's birthday is fast approaching,am sure he will love this vehicle, his a mechanic and a handy man,so if there is anything that need to be fixed in it just let me know he will handle it.
I have a mover that will come for the pick up once payment clears in your account and he will handle the title for me.I look forward to hear from you with the information below.

Your PayPal e-Mail Address :
Full name:
Firm Price:
Zip code for pickup:

Thanks.

Lisa.

I got suspicious but sent an Invoice from Paypal, not providing my email adress as requested. I then received this reply:

Subject: Payment has been made

I had a little problem with the mover they said they can only schedule the pick up date and time after they receive their money for the pick up fee via Western Union money transfer in there head office in Baltimore, So i included $1400 and $100 to the payment i sent to your paypal account, PayPal will instruct you on how to get the money sent to my mover.

The payment has been made and the money has been deducted from my account...Kindly get the shipping fee sent to the name and address below and send the details to paypal email customer care for your total funds to be credited. I believe that since payment has been made, the advert should be taken off the site and please do let me know your free date and time so that i can give it to my mover to use it to register the date and time they will be coming for the pick up in your location.

Agent details: Victor Johnson,6305 Sefton Avenue,Baltimore, MD 21214, United States

I hope to read from you soon.

Lisa

at which point, I looked up 'paypal scams' and bingo, found this site! I haven't yet received the fake Paypal response, maybe I won't since I didn't provide my email address, but I sure felt like a fool for falling for it. No money lost, so no harm, no foul. Still, watch out for this one. "Too good to be true" was never so accurate!

Hi gutzfam, Welcome to Scamwarners. Good for you for noticing something was wrong and searching out more information. I wish more people would do that before interacting with people on the internet. Also it is always good to hear that the website helped prevent somebody from becoming a victim. Please take a look around and read up on the various scams. Education is our best defense.

I recently put my camping trailer for sale on Kijiji. I received this email after a couple questions about the camper. We sold our truck on the same website a year and a half ago, and almost got the exact same email. Except, being the first time we had done this, we almost fell in the trap! We almost got scammed. So when I seen this the other day, I knew right away it was a scam. I emailed bak saying, "cash only and in person sorry to try to scam someone else I'm not stupid buddy"

Thanks for getting back to me, i just wanted to make sure nothing is been left out. I will be buying this for the price you have listed it for. Payment will be sent using PayPal and i will handle the PayPal surcharge as well. I will arrange with a shipping company to have this picked up at your location once i have paid as i am out of town at the moment. Am a marine engineer and due to the nature of my work, phone calls making are restricted,so you can send me your PayPal email account so that i can send the payment at once and its easy to sign up for one just log on to www.paypal.com,i will be responsible for the pick up charges Note: i'll also include the Shipping company's fee so kindly Get back to me with your PayPal email account so i can proceed with the payment asap.. Thanks

Hi,

I have been scammed by this guy today and unfortunately I was to late to get my money back. He was very clever with his words and he got me, lucky it was only £100 and not more. but there seems to be a trend so far and that is mainly motor cars. I was selling musical equipment!!!! then when I found out it was a scam i reported it and i told him i was not longer going through with this and he sent me a scam email from interpole!!! but from his email address! DO NOT FALL FOR THIS IT IS A TRAP AND HE WILL TAKE YOUR CASH DO NOT REPLY TO ANYTHING THIS PERSON MAY SEND YOU.
by cannyscouser Thu Feb 21, 2013 7:08 am
Hi, we have had a similar e-mail contact from this guy today, but he is using the name Andrew Smith, a Petroleum Engineer, otherwise all details are the same. I was a little suspicious as the item we were selling was furniture and he said he wanted it for a birthday present for his son. So I typed his details into google and there it was, other people who also had made contact with this guy and let us know that he was indeed a scammer. I only hope that now you know he is using yet another identity, other people may be made aware of this dubious character.
by TerranceBoyce Thu Feb 21, 2013 8:50 am
Thanks for the mail, i am buying this for my son as his birthday gift.....

The scammer is sitting in an internet cafe running through eBay, Craigslist and other sites, sending out exactly the same mail to every seller he can find, which is why he refers to your item as 'this'.

He has no intention of buying anything and he only needs to catch a few sellers in his trap to make a good living out of scamming. His follow up mails will also be a template format but he'll adjust them if necessary.

The 'birthday gift' is a common ploy, usually with the buyer being at sea, on an oil rig or abroad and unable to view or pick up the item himself. To make the scam work he has to convince you to pay money to an intermediary to collect the item, which doesn't make sense but he wants to persuade you to do this by convincing you to use paypal so that he can send you spoof messages pretending he's paid you the price plus the shipping fee.

All he's after is the shipping fee.

If the buyer can't collect your item and he wants you to pay someone to collect it - you're dealing with a scammer. If he can pay you, he could pay the shipper, but the scam wouldn't work if he did that.

CAR ADVERTS - If a car seller mentions escrow - he's scamming you Never ever for any reason pay anything until you have seen and inspected the vehicle
