Craigslist, Ebay and other online buying/selling scams.

The scammer's punishment for lack of alacrity and stupidity is that they give us a nice view of what they're doing and how they do it.

From what they've already shown us old fake pages can be traced here

ukprivscgi.org.uk/eb/itm/.../index2.php?...0?
vpp-page.info/?
private-e-ads.co.uk/2009-Toyota-Hilux/index2.html?...ID:?
usch67.12n.de/index-2.html?

... and we'll get advance warning if they set up any more.

These are the details from my saved copy of the fake page.

Yes - the original advert appeared on Gumtree.

The fake page is a work of art, in all the bad ways

Marketplace Safety Tip

eBay Motors - Safe Buying Tips for Vehicles

1 NEVER back out from a transaction after you have commited to buy a vehicle. Your purchase is final and must be completed.

2. ALWAYS pay for your item promptly to avoid shipping delays from the seller.

3. GET a fast reply to your questions by contacting the seller.

To recap - the real eBay account isn't associated with this fraud. After you saw the original advert, on somewhere like Gumtree, you were directed to a fake page that impersonated the real eBay page. The fake page held the fake advert and was a copy of a real eBay page but had been edited to support the fantasy eBay vehicle protection scheme. The links all worked unless they directed you to other links supporting the scam.

Only the victim is intended to see it as it becomes much easier to trace once everyone knows the trick. Maybe eBay would like to see a copy.

CAR ADVERTS - If a car seller mentions escrow - he's scamming you Never ever for any reason pay anything until you have seen and inspected the vehicle

Time for a rest. This gives some idea of the scale of fraud the criminals are involved in. I'll add the rest later.

lol damn I was going to save their page down to my PC too - but got the link via my Windows phone today and only just got home - they have closed their domain down! Well at least the default or index.htm

I pushed for the eBay link last night just for fun and eventually they took the bate:
Done here is the listing:

Nissan Elgrand Series 3

To secure it hit the buy it now button, fill your details and further informations will show up how to proceed.

Evelyn

the url was - http://www.privlsts.com/

No offence to the poor bugga above who got scammed but the very fact that the page was not on eBay url - that the guy andychu used as the fall guy with 100% positive feed back was in the UK??

And as pointed out above the laughable "SAFETY TIP" :laugh-s:

That was all about safety for the scammer not the buyer :bondage:

And the exposed email that eBay would never do....

unfortunately no sceen capture or saved page now though as they shut down quick after what ever you guys did today!! :=)

Though we have people here who work on taking down fake sites, I can't see the point in deluging them with these pages that are possibly 'spent' as regards fraudulent use, so I've contacted someone who has been taking down fraudulent ebay accounts and hope he can use his contacts with ebay to take action. I can't imagine they'd be too excited to see these criminals using their logo so widely in fraud. A global corporation can be even more effective and powerful than law enforcement when protecting its brand.

We're not critical of victims shadowknyght simply because you'd be amazed at some of the frauds that major international banks have fallen for, and they don't have the excuse that they are unfamiliar with what they're doing - you'd think.

I've saved the fake page you're using and I can fill you in on anything you need to know. I'll post up a copy of it later to the forum to make it easier for people to recognise.

Back to the list of fake eBay pages.

and that's it - for now.

Each of these pages represents a victim being lined up to pay money to a criminal. Whether they did or not I can't say, but it's operating on a large scale with a lot of money involved.

CAR ADVERTS - If a car seller mentions escrow - he's scamming you Never ever for any reason pay anything until you have seen and inspected the vehicle

Bear in mind

IF YOU INSIST ON VIEWING AND INSPECTING ANY VEHICLE YOU INTEND TO BUY - THESE CRIMINALS WILL NEVER GET A PENNY/CENT OF YOUR MONEY

There are plenty of other scams that can catch you out, but you will avoid paying a lot of money just to see a photograph of a vehicle you'd like to own.

No lookee - no buyee.

yes when I asked for a photo not already available on the gallery they had linked me to - they refused to acknowledge the request, when asked again they said that was all there was available...

The car I was looking at buying had an aftermarket reversing camera - I simply asked for a photo of the view you would see on screen via the camera - this basic request seemed to annoy the scammer!

You could always also ask them to send a copy of their license or the cars rego papers scanned - 99% certain they would not - as neither the license nor the rego papers would show the claimed address nor Evelyn! :yikes:

lol they are persistent! How naive do they think I am?

asking for a new link - just to waste more of their time and money! ;)

Yes I have ended the listing i was going to accept another offer and I was relisting for another price. You want it or not ?

The same or related group(s) of scammers are crawling all over the major ad sites, and many of the small ones too.

After coming across you shadowknyght they may decide that Australians are just too bolshy to deal with.

(Being an international forum with many Americans using it I'd better explain that 'bolshy' is "an adjective meaning that someone is very assertive in the pursuit of something and/or hostile to authoritarian manoeuvres by others".)

The art of scamming involves persuading someone to do something unwise, and being 'bolshy' is a good defence against it.

Hi
Sorry bit dense when it comes to these scams.I can understand how they can use someones identity but i can not understand the fact that i contacted kayb200 through ebay messenger and the reply came back through ebay messenger. This gave me the confidence to proceed with my purchase. If somebody could explain how it works, it may stop somebody else being so easely scamed by these people.Coud kayb200 be involved ?

Welcome to Scamwarners kevjenks13.

There are plenty of scammer operating ebay accounts, you may be surprised to hear. I know one person who specialises in reporting the fake accounts he finds. Their tactic is to get you off ebay as regards payment or to attempt to bamboozle you with 'spoofed' mails to believe that somehow your transaction remains covered by ebay.

I don't want to detail every method that's used to spot them and different people use different tactics to uncover them. The simplest way to protect yourself as a buyer is never to buy any vehicle you haven't seen and inspected and, if you're buying an elederly camper van, it's foolish to do anything else.

I'm currently chasing up some leads on a camper van scammer, but I can't say anything about it for now.

Welcome to Scamwarners purplestormwitch.

Glad to hear you avoided becoming another of his/his group's victims. Many others haven't been so fortunate. I've just scanned Autotrader for scam adverts and listed them in another posting and I'll do the same on ebay for Camper Vans, and yes, they are that common that when you know how to check them out, they're that easy to identify.

Camper vans are a scammer special and they find they get best results and most victims from posting them.

This particular story is a standard one they use and I've 'baited' him many times, and will do many times in the future.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but "[email protected]" is at it again. Great site - came across it when googling "[email protected]" who it turns out is responsible for this advert on Pistonheads: http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/land-rover/defender/landrover-defender-2002/2044276?isexperiment=true
Couple of dodgy things in the advert itself:
1) the phone number is too short
2) the location is Hackney, but the scenery in some of the pictures looks a bit more rural
Nevertheless, I sent a request via the website to view the car. [email protected] responded to say:
Hello,
Its still for sale. Excellent condition with no damages or any faults. All necessary documents available. My current location is Scotland due to my work commitments, If this is going to be a quick sale I will let it go for £4,200 delivered at my costs. Are you familiar to eBay? I will list the land rover defender on eBay Motors for the £4,200 buy it now price and I will send you a link to my auction, so you can buy it immediate.
As soon as you will confirm the payment to eBay, I will proceed delivery without any additional costs for you.
In case you are not familiar with them, please read their Buyer Protection and will see that they cover 100% the transaction done through them up to £50,000. You will receive the land rover defender with all the documents. As you know eBay is the best company of online transactions. If indeed interested in it and have the funds, I will list it on eBay, as I have a 100% positive feedback with them.
Please let me know your decision.
Thank you

The advert was very detailed and well written, whereas the email above has a few grammatical errors. So getting suspicious. My response:
Hi Evelyn
I'm in Scotland too. Where are you and i can maybe come and view it?
Cheers
Stuart

finally:
Due to my location and since view is not an option I have requested personal support and I was approved to use Buyer Protection Program. Here is how the process works through the Buyer Protection Program:

- I make the private listing on eBay for you,
- you go and buy it through their website,
- you have to pay for the item to eBay to secure the funds,
- they confirm me that they received the funds,
- I deliver the car,
- you receive the car,
- they send me the money,

Everything is covered by eBay. I will get paid only after you confirm that you received the car in good order.
Let me know if this is acceptable. Thank you

at this point I googled the email address and came across this site. I've reported the ad to Pistonheads and notified Ebay that this type of scam is going on (not that it will be news to them). In your experience is it worth raising this to Action Fraud?
