Craigslist, Ebay and other online buying/selling scams.

Hello troutface and thank you for posting the scammer information.

Please remember keep all Ebay transactions on Ebay. The seller list an item and the buyer buys through Ebay paying through Paypal. Never accept to do a transaction outside of ebay through email. You will have no protection and bad things can happen. Especially to a novice as you stated. I suggest that everyone check their Paypal account directly to check balance and payments received. Logging in directly without any links.

Scammers will make false and loud threats of police, FBI and anything they think that would get a victim to comply with their scam. Nothing will happen to you. The scammer is not going to tell the authorities that he is a thief and scammer. Be aware of future scams. You were a possible victim. So the scammer may sell your email address to other scammers or he may target you with a new scam.

Hi,

I listed a car on the Australian site Gumtree and had a text from Michael Seay asking to email him details to [email protected]. I sent him an email and got a similar reply that previous people have:

thanks for mailing back, I'm ok with the price and thecondition, I'm buying it for my vacation, because i'll be comingsoon from our rig as a mechanical engineer on a rigoffshore,i won't be able to come for the inspection due tothe nature of my work,i would have love to call you in personbut our satellite server has been down which restrict ourcalls.i will be paying you through PayPal,pls get back to mewith you PayPal details so i can proceed with the paymentand contact the courier agent who will come to pick it upand deliver it to my place.Await your reply

I then replied saying I wasn't comfortable with paypal and would prefer a cash sale. It sounded suspicious to me, but I didn't think to google him at this point. I then received the second email below:

Hi thanks for the mail i can't do bank cheques for now due to natureof my work but i can transfer the money into your bank account ifso, get back to me with your bsb number and account number so that ican send you the money Thanks Micheal

This is when I decided to google his name and I found this site. I have not replied to his second email, but he has my mobile number and email address, should I be worried? I thought it was odd that he then requested a bank deposit, does that mean he is trying to get into my bank account? Hopefully this will bring Michael's name to the top of the google search again so other people can be warned.
Also, a previous poster mentioned reporting to police, can the police actually do anything/does it achieve anything?

Thank you, I am so glad I found this site!

He can't do anything with your name and mobile number.

With your bank account details, he would potentially be able to use your account for fraud--or simply make a fraudulent payment into your account that would only be detected after you withdrew money and sent it to the fake shipper. Then the bank would take all the money back, and you would have lost all the cash you sent.

Welcome to scamwarners mswenson2,

100% scam. The scammer does not want your car. What he wants is your money. Once he sends the fake Paypal payment from a fake Paypal address he will want you to send an over payment to the fake shipper. The fake Paypal email will almost appear to be real.

The fake shipper / agent is the same scammer. He will want you to send money by Western Union or Money Gram to the shipper or agent. If you did you will never see that money again.

Please contacta moferatorstor if you have a question or information about this post.

Please do not tell the scammer he is posted here.

Selling our call on Autotrader and received this email after answering some generic questions on the car from the initial email.

"From: "sharmin evelyn" <[email protected]>

Thank you for getting back to me, I am really interested in purchasing
the Car. i have read all you wrote about it and its well
satisfactory. Can you assure me that i will not be disappointed if i
buy this Vehicle as a Birthday gift for someone? as I'm ready to pay
your asking price but not cash in person because I'm an Marine
Engineer and i am presently on a contract which will end in couple of
months, the contract is strictly no call due to the lack of reception
on the sea area, but I'm able to access my mail through my laptop and
my only quickest payment option is PayPal,its safe fast and secure and
i will be responsible for the paypal transaction charges so you can
get your expected amount.
If you don't have an account with paypal, its pretty easy to open
one,Just log on to www.paypal.com and sign up. I hope we can make the
purchase as fast as possible as my Dad's birthday is fast
approaching,am sure he will love this vehicle, he's a mechanic and a
handy man,so if there is anything that need to be fixed in it just let
me know he will handle it.
I have a picker that will come for the pick up once payment clears in
your account and he will handle the title for me.

I look forward to hear from you with the information below.

Your PayPal e-Mail Address :
Full name:
Firm Price:
Zip code for pickup:

Thanks.
Sharmin"

Based on the bad grammar and almost verbatim message I have no doubt now that this is a scam. Thanks!

Hi,

I posted an ad on autotrader. Literally within a couple hours of submitting my ad I received a text message from "1-323-774-6907". The contents of the text message are as follows:

----------------------------
(1/2) I am interested in purchasing your Car. I have read all you
wrote about the Car and the pictures too and its well satisfactory. Do
you still have it

(2/2) available for sale?
Please get back to me ASAP on:
[email protected]
----------------------------

I did reply to the above address, as it seemed legitimate. Upon doing so I received the following email from "Sharmin Evelyn"

===================
Hello,
Thanks for getting back at me.I was reviewing your vehicle listed on
Autotrader.com. I'm very interested and I would like to ask you a few
questions first.

* Do you have the extra keys?
* Do you have the spare tire?
* Where did you get your car serviced?
* Have you ever had any transmission repairs?
* Is there any rust on the vehicle?

I look forward to hearing back from you soon.
Thanks
====================

I was fooled by this at first, but I should have known since there were no direct details about my specific car.

Upon replying to this email I received the same exact email as shown above from "Sharmin Evelyn"

I got done by the same thing. Within an hour of posting my car i got emailed by a "Michael Seay" from email address "[email protected]", saying he was a mechanical engineer of shore and wouldnt be around for inspection. I wasn't as quick to catch on and sent him my Paypal email for payment. Does that matter? can he do anything with that?

We just go the same scammer trying to "buy" a tractor from us. Why can't they prosecute these people (if you consider someone like this human)? It saddens me that people can do this to other people. We just spent a couple thousand getting a car fixed and my husband lost his job last year. We are selling the tractor because we have to. This guy would have taken us for what little we have left, if I had not had a bad feeling about his email and his email address. Thank goodness I checked google before we did anything.
