GUMTREE - PAYPAL SCAM

I had only just listed my car on Gumtree, and within 10 mins of the listing going live, I received a text message. Thinking nothing of it, I emailed back the details the potential buyer wanted.
His reply is whats below...... People like him make me sick!!!

Due to the nature of my job and my location i will not be able to come for inspection am a very busy type as i work long hours everyday,i don't really think i need to come for a look, because i have gone through your advertisement and i am satisfied with it so i will call you when am chanced from work but as of now we can be chatting online or sending emails

I put my camera up for sale I got a text asking me to email Daniel [email protected], I got a reply saying he wanted to buy the camera sent paypal details I was a tad weary of this I sent my paypal details I got this reply from the scammer

Just to let you know "Alex More" is still active. I posted something on Gumtree last night and within and hour had a text from mobile number 0428465117 (Australian) asking about my 'Apliance' and telling me to contact him via [email protected].

I emailed and got the following reply, which I Googled, which led me here.

The email read:

I Agree with the price you willing to sell it , i will be happy to paying directly into your paypal account without any delay. I would have prefer to see or inspection it but am busy, i work long hours everyday,i have gone through your advertisement and i am satisfied with it.

As for the payment..i will be paying you with the fastest and secure way to pay online(PayPal).

I have a private courier agent that will come over for the pick up at your door after the payment have been made, .You can now send me your PayPal email so i can pay in right away and also include your address in your reply.If you don't have a paypal account, you can easily set up one...log on to www.paypal.com and sign up. its very easy.I await your reply asap

The English language name but obviously ESL usage made me suspicious, as well as the fact that the request seemed so urgent when I had indicated pick up would be preferred in a couple of weeks.

Just posted my first ad on gumtree and got a very quick response via txt, but the phone number was not recognised. I replied to the email and got a response similar to the ones mentioned above. I could see where it was going, they wanted PayPal account but did not mention the couch. Here is the email:

I am very keen. How i wish i could come for viewing and inspection as am currently out of the country ATM and i want it picked up before i get back. I would like to pay you using paypal due to my inability to make a bank deposit which is safer for me. Kindly send me a paypal payment invoice or create an account with paypal on www.paypal.com.au if you dont have one. I will make a solid pick up arrangement with my transport agent who will be coming over for pick up once you receive full payment into your paypal account. Have a nice day. Few more photos will be appreciated as well.

A quick google search led me here and confirmed my doubts. Scammer uses the email grayjenny23@gmail

Not sure if it is worth continuing to play the game to get more info out of them, or just ignore a send to spam folder. Is there any value in keeping track of these scammers?

Just ignore the scammer. There is no need to keep communicating with them.

By posting the scammers scripts, phone numbers and email addresses people are able to search the internet. So yes, it helpful to track them and post them here.

Selling a camera on Gumtree and got this response today - All seemed genuine until the last email...

First it was a text msg with the following

"regarding the camera do you still have it,tell me it is condition.reply me back here at ciaradenehy at gmail.com"

I replied to that e-mail address and got back

"Thanks for the quick reply.
Kindly let me know the last price for this item. any reduction from the price on the ad?
I hope to hear from you soon
Regards"

I replied I was sticking to my price then got the following reply which raised my suspitions and I am not replying too...

Why dont Gumtree ban anyone with a Nigeria IP address!!!!

Scammers are well versed in how to surf behind a proxy to hide their location, and not all Nigerians are scammers and not all are based in Nigeria, and many other races will scam you too. Many ad sites are overrun with scammers, as are employment sites and dating sites, and the number of fake sites we turn up daily is astonishing.

The same "Alex More" idiot tried to scam me last night. I've reported this to gumtree and here's the chain of what he said. I got suspicious after he did not want to come over and look at ANYTHING. And the fact that he has enough money for a "agent" to collect things for him but is buying second hand Ikea furniture. I wasn't born yesterday buddy!

I am in IT so I also checked where his IP address was coming from. It was Canada. If anyone wants to know how to find someone's IP, go here: http://www.online-tech-tips.com/compute ... ip-address. You can then use a number of IP locator websites to see what country they originate from.

Hello,thanks so much for getting back to me..I would have loved to pay the the way you have suggested but right now am not in the position of where i can handle cash to someone to pay you on my behalf and i do not have access to my bank account which is why i have insisted on paying you withe paypal because its very safe and fast for me to do transaction online...you can easily set an account up wit paypal by gong to http://www.paypal.com and once you have done that and you send me your detail i will then be going ahead in making the payment and once the payment has been made my pick up agent will then come over for the pick up

The scammer does not want what you are selling. He does not have an agent, mover or shipper to come pick it up. He wants to steal your money. He wants to send you a fake Paypal payment with an over payment. He will tell you to pay the pick up agent prior to your money being released by Paypal. The fake Paypal email will look real but it is fake. Any email you receive in this transaction is from the scammer himself playing all roles.

Always log into Paypal directly without any links to verify payments received. Scammers use this same scam with fake checks and money orders. It is best to sell your property face to face in a public place and not alone.
