Room for Rent and other rental scams

Hello to everyone.
Lately i have been looking for room to live and i noticed something strange after contacting with Landlords-Ladies. After two replys from different people with almost same email talking about their lawyer and asking for transfer to be done through western Union. I've given them my information but i haven't done the transfer yet (thank god) .Am i in danger (they know much of my information : name, surname, current address) :yikes: ?? Then the thing got serious as i contacted with 5 people and all of them send almost the same crap email :bondage: asking for financial proof and they talked with their lawyer and same old crap. This is one of the emails and please tell me your opinion:

Thanks for the reply and the information provided. I and my lawyer have both agreed to make a reservation for you so you don''t need to be worried as long as you have promise me that you will take proper good care of my flat just the way it is. However, my lawyer asked me not to collect any money from you as long as you have not sign a contract neither have i taken you round my flat so he decided to make a confirmation of your financial ability before we proceed with the reservation.

Henceforth, my lawyer and i have decided to carry out a simple test on financial ability to pay for my rent before coming for viewing. I would not ask you to send your bank statement. At least 1 month rent of 300 GBP and security deposit which is £ 600 which is refundable after your four week stay in my flat, would be required from you to transfer through the money gram. You can make the transfer with your family member or friend's name as a sender and your name as a receiver to an address in Brighton and you can as well use my flat address.
Once you have done this, scan the receipt to me and if you do not have scanner, you may write out the details on the receipt as i will send it to my lawyer to verify if it's truly genuine and available in your custody, after verification, then we can proceed for the reservation and you can easily pick up the money at the nearest money gram post office when you arrive to Brighton and also, i will refund back to you the cost of transfer when we meet. I 'll appreciate if you can get the transfer done today or tomorrow morning in other for me to finalize the reservation before your arrival as they are alot of people looking for a good flat this summer period.
I look forward to reading from you soon.
Regards
Mr/Mrs Brenard

Hello Anonymos and welcome to Scamwarners.com

If the only details that you have divulged are very basic, such as names, addresses and telephone numbers, there is nothing to worry about,. This Scammer is trying his scheme with so many people you will soon become forgotten about unless you continue to write to him.

The Scammer will have wanted you to send him money to have keys and documents to be couriered from abroad, or to send money to a family friend to show that you are financially sound and not a time waster. He would have asked you send money by wire transfer (normally Western Union or Moneygram).

These transfers can be picked up virtually anywhere in the world and with the minimum of identification. They are almost impossible to trace once the money has been collected.

You may find this BBC news report and video of interest.... it shows how a similar Room for Rent scam works..

You might be able to help me.

If you are in the United Kingdom or are looking for property in the United Kingdom - Action Fraud, who are an executive agency of the Home Office, have asked me to encourage people who have received this kind of attempted e-mail fraud to report the event to them. They need to know how widespread this problem actually is, even if you have not lost money. Action Fraud can be contacted on-line via their reporting tool http://www.actionfraud.police.uk/report_fraud

In the USA you can report to The Federal Trade Commission, the nation's consumer protection agency: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/F ... px?Lang=en

In France you can report to the Ministry of the Interior https://www.internet-signalement.gouv.fr

If you are still using listing sites to look for property, and If you receive any replies asking you to send money in advance of viewing - (This includes making a Western Union payment to yourself or a family friend, and paying for keys and documents to be couriered to you from abroad.) - would you please forward (not copy/paste) the mail to me at [email protected] and I will list them at scamwarners.com if they are not already there. This may help others if they are searching for the e-mail address of the 'Landlord'.

Already added the above 4 email addresses to "Blocked senders" in my Outlook's Junk Mail settings. (Right-click on any message, and select "Junk Email Options", go to "Blocked", click "Add" and copy-paste the email address. Then click "Apply" and "OK")

However: is there a way to import ALL known scam emails listed at www.scamwarners.com at once in MS Outlook??!! Is there a way to import black lists?

To fight spam, I use the "AntySpam" Add-on for MS Outlook 2010. It can check all incoming emails against numerous public blacklist servers (for example, bl.spamcop.net).
Question: Does scamwarners.com have such a blacklist server?

My other anti-spam add-on for MS Outlook is SpamBayes. This one you need to teach. I told it to mark as spam all with confidence level >70%, and as Suspected spam all with confidence level between 40% and 70%. Also, manually mark as spam all spams it does not recognize (still in Inbox folder).
