Claims to live in Indiana, USA and has a "dependant son dave", his "wife" having ran off with his best friend and left him. Also claims to travel to Africa on business. Further claims to have been orphaned as a child and adopted by mean parents who beat him and mistreated him. He had to live on the streets and saw a friend get shot. Got into drugs but turned to the lord and found his way in God's Light.

This scammer prefers to chat on messanger, often displaying the picture of his "son" instead of himself. He uses a lot of copy and paste stolen emails and poems from places like lovingyou.com or lovinghugs.com.

Please note, the following exchange was between an experienced Scambaiter and this scammer.

The scambaiter is using safe baiting techniques to ensure his/her real identity is not compromised, please do not communicate with known scammers without knowledge on how to do this in safety.

The purpose of showing this chat exchange is to show how many scammers run their love scam and to point out some things that will help you to tell that it is a scammer you are dealing with.

I must also point out that the scambaiter is very experienced and proficient at wasting as much of the scammers time as possible, if this chat was between a real victim and a scammer, you will notice that the victim will be doing most of the writing while the scammer’s conversation has very little actual content

Again, please do not try this yourself.

Messenger chats;

The first thing you will notice is a distinct lack of using your name, they prefer to use terms such as baby, hunny, Mylove as this removes the chance of getting the victims name wrong

Danny Howard: mylove
Danny Howard: i am i a rural area mylove

victim: in a hotel?

Danny Howard: were i work is not in the city ok mylove

victim: so they have a hotel out in the rural area

Danny Howard: yea

victim: brb

Danny Howard: mostly for foreigh workers

While in chat, the scammer needs to make up his lies on the run, he is now talking about a rural hotel that is mostly for foreign workers

Danny Howard: ok mylove

victim: ok im back

Danny Howard: ok
Danny Howard: babe i am here just trying to do some stuffs okmylove

Here we have another common mistake made by the African scammers, they have poor grasp of English as you can see by the use of the word “stuffs”, keep an eye out and you will see other instances of this

The male love scammers will more often than not have young children, this is to appeal to the female victims heart strings and show how good a father they are.

You will notice the he uses “wonna” and now “gonna” while that is no sure sign of a scammer, it is not common for English speakers who are educated to use that word

Now we have religion, scammers love to have you believe they are highly religious, this is to make their victims believe they are honest as many religious people believe another religious person can not be scamming them.

Scammers generally are religious, they even pray for good paying victims believing god will help them to scam the “greedy westerners”

A distinct lack of capitalisation, again, this is no proof but please consider this person will be pretending to be an educated man

Now he is using another name for his victim that is not her name

The use of the “ok” is another common term used by African scammers

victim: that will be very nice

Danny Howard: honey i am gonna be coming home soon hun

victim: ok one moment

Danny Howard: you are so beautiful my love
Danny Howard: i am really missing you here mylove
Danny Howard: i am coming home soon to be with you

victim: I can't wait Danny

The scammer goes missing here, it is common while they are trying to scam you to also be trying to scam other victims so you will notice they go missing for lengths of time without explanation

victim: are you there?

Danny Howard: yeah
Danny Howard: yeah mylove
Danny Howard: i am here mylove

Now he needs to go back and make sure he is following the right conversation

victim: I will be here for you when you get here

victim: yes me too

Danny Howard: babe i am gonna have to leave soon ok mylove

The scammer has another victim in chat who is perhaps more promising or at a more vulnerable stage of the scam, you will be able to spot this by absences getting progressively longer, similarly, you may notice that all of a sudden they are having much shorter breaks as another victim may leave chat

victim: ok

Danny Howard: after this when next your gonna be seeing me in person ok

victim: ok I'm so happy
victim: So when will you be coming in then?
victim: this weekend?

Danny Howard: yes mylove
Danny Howard: i am bout leaving mylove
Danny Howard: i got to go now

victim: I can't wait to see you at the airport and meet Dave
victim: ok honey
victim: i will miss you

The chat session ends here but let’s look back on what has happened;

He did not address the victim by her name throughout the entire chat

During the entire chat, besides “I love you”, and “I miss you”

He has shared very little information

He could have simply said he is in a hotel and leaving in a week’s time and the entire content of his message would have been covered

Using the points I made in the above chat, you can see straightaway that this chat will be going in the same direction?

Chat session continues;

Danny Howard: i had a bad day

victim: why honey?
victim: are you ok?
victim: is Dave alright?

Danny Howard: he is sick angel

Scammers have common excuses for the many things that go wrong, the sick child is very common

victim: oh my goodness whats wrong

Danny Howard: my love i have had a bad today and i dont know what to do am spleechless angel

Another common mistake for African scammers is to use “am” rather than “I am”, keep your eye out for it

victim: whats wrong with him?

Danny Howard: angel i want to get back to be with u but my son is so sick he has malaria

victim: OMG!

Danny Howard: i have miss u so much cant wait \to see u angel
Danny Howard: i know angel i have some thing to tell u
Danny Howard: just hang on ok angel

victim: ok
victim: what do you want to tell me baby?

Danny Howard: is about my coming back angel with dave so sick

Now we find the excuse for not being able to show at the planned meeting, there will be many excuses, the sick child is just one of them, it could have also been a mugging, lost wallet, robbed, car accident or detained at the airport to name some of the more common excuses

And now we have the excuse for asking for money but you need to ask yourself the question, his son is so sick with a serious and sometimes fatal disease yet he is spending the day at the airport

Danny Howard: it cost me 6000 that is what i cant understand why is different

You will notice while they are asking for money they will be paying a lot more attention to you, see how long and frequent each chat is.

victim: you want me to send you money

Danny Howard: angel i dont want u to misunderstand this ok angel i dont mind it been a loan and i will pay it back when i get back home my son is sick and i need to get out of here

They always tell you they will pay it back, in this case he says he can pay it back tomorrow so why wouldn’t he have access to it today

victim: Danny i dont know what to say

Danny Howard: angel all that have been taking care of i just need that 500 to complete the flight ticket fee
Danny Howard: are u there angel

victim: yes

Danny Howard: are u going to help me out so that we can be together angel and my son can get well

Playing on the victims emotions again, he says the money is not for him but for a sick child

victim: im thinking about all of this
victim: so what has happened to your money?

Danny Howard: angel i know what is like
Danny Howard: nothing because i was pay with a check and i can only cash it when i get back in boa

Of course, he has been paid with a cheque that he cannot cash, so how has he cashed the previous pay cheques?

victim: we have only known each other a couple of weeks
victim: now you want me to send you money?

Danny Howard: angel i cant evern believe that am asking that from u
Danny Howard: all i need is just understanding i dont have any one that i can talk to this about but u angel

So here we have a man who apparently works for a large company with other professionals yet the only person he could possibly ask for help is somebody he has only known for a little over a week

victim: What about your friends

Danny Howard: angel are u going to help me out if there is any i would not have been asking u for help

Again,trying to convince you that you are the only person who could help him

Danny Howard: well i cant access my account from here

Now he cannot access his bank account, yet he was able to get money for the tickets he just said he has paid for

Danny Howard: is not the same banking sentor angel

“sentor” I think he meant “centre” or “center” for those from the US

victim: where exactly are you at this moment
victim: im not even sure where you are

Danny Howard: common they dont have any international bank here that i can access my account with

Again, how has he been getting access to his money

Danny Howard: is undevelop area in nigeria angel i am helpless here and my son is so sick can you help me pls

“undevelop” (ed) and again bringing the sons health into the equation, if this was so desperate, hold off travelling and use the money to save his sons life but of course, that wouldn’t work in with his scam

Danny Howard: angel all u have to do is to go to the western union office and they will tell u how to do it

Now we have Western Union, Western Union is a service that allows you to send money to person overseas, it is a fine service if you are sending money to somebody you personally know and not some stranger, it can be picked up by anybody who knows the correct information from any where in the world and the receiver can remain anonymous, if ANYBODY EVER ASKS YOU TO SEND MONEY BY WESTERN UNION, YOU CAN BE SURE IT IS A SCAM

Anthony Lewis? why wouldn’t he want it sent to him, the real answer is because he has fake identification in that name, but let's see what excuse he uses

victim: so i need to get the money to him and not you?

victim: you are in a strange country

Danny Howard: I really dont think you understand me... You can send me the money while i get it and get it paid here. stuffs are done over here localy honey. This is not united states.. this is Africa angel. Just understand me ok

Of course everything is different in Nigeria, Nigeria has lots more scammers

Danny Howard: But you gonna get it back once i get back home ok. I just wanna leave this place first with my sick son

Reconfirming his sick son and assuring you he will give it straight back

victim: I understand I'm so worried for him

Danny Howard: things are done localy here.. once you send me the money, am gonna get it and get it paid, then i will send you my flight details for i and dave

“for I and dave”?

Danny Howard: I just feel bad
Danny Howard: I just feel bad cos you dont seems to understand my situation on. I wish you were here with me to see how things works here ok

He only feels bad because his victim is not doing as he has asked

Just proving that “I and dave” was not just a typo

Again an educated man who uses the term “more easier”

Now the scammer thinks his victim will be paying up the money he is being very nice and telling the victim how much he loves her, let's see if he tries to increase the amount

victim: i still feel really bad for your son being so sick

Danny Howard: I know.. But you know i will take good care of him honey

victim: i will be so happy to see you and Dave

Danny Howard: I know you will honey. thanks alot love
Danny Howard: I really dont know how to thank you for helping me angel, you are so sweete

victim: you are welcome I dont know how I would feel with a sick child in a strange country. I really understand.
victim: i dont want you stuck over there and he needs good medical treatment

And again, well, go on, scream her name, do you even remember what it is?

Now he has what he wants it is time to move onto the next victim and hope his luck continues

Danny Howard: think its pretty late and besides cuz of your health

The Scambaiter spots it straightaway and tries to keep the scammer online to keep him from other victims

Danny Howard: i and dave have not had anything to eat today

Noticing 7pm is not late enough for his victim to be going to bed he changes excuse

Another consideration is how sick his son is with malaria, yet his son is now hungry and they are going to grab a bite to eat

victim: dont understand

Danny Howard: i am gonna be with you soon

victim: yes but who would have helped you if i didnt?
victim: you have to be more careful
victim: especially with your son being there

Danny Howard: i also ran into some dept in the hotel

I just knew it was coming, the scammer is now trying to find another excuse to get more money from the victim, they are so greedy they just cannot help themselves

Danny Howard: the hotel said they were not gonna let go of our property if we dont pay our debt

victim: oh no this is terrible

victim: you just need to get back here then we can fix it once you are safe here

Danny Howard: its only 300$

And here we have it, another $300 is requested

Now this is just sickening. The scammer who fully intends on breaking his victim’s heart, wants her to promise she will not break his

victim: i have had mine broken and i would never do that to you

Here the experienced scambaiter wants to show just how low he will go and prove he has absolutely no compassion for his victims

He was told in the afternoon but he is trying again to bring it forward, the longer he has to wait, the more chance there is that the victim may tell somebody else who will reveal what is going on
