Learn about us and introduce yourself

Greetings, new here....

I help organize a legitimate research conference (now in our 27th year). Last week one of our attendees notified us that he received what was obviously a scam message - someone is sending out notes telling people that they can get free registration at our conference by contacting them. One of our attendees decided to bait the person, and of course they asked for name, address, passport #, etc., and also said that to get "free" registration you have to prepay for 7 nights at the "conference hotel" (which isn't the actual hotel where the conference is being held, and presumably isn't a hotel at all).

There was more energy put into this than fake conference I've seen - they matched our dates, city, topics, sponsoring organization, etc., and even signed the messages with the real name and affiliation of our registration coordinator.

I've looked in the boards for this site, and see lots of fake conference scams, but no "real" conference scams. Is this new? Is there any point in reporting it (and if so, where)? The email for more information is at gncn.net, which seems to be a nexus for lots of scams....

Thanks for any advice!

Welcome VirginiaGuy,

I'm sorry that your conference was used in this way.

This does occasionally happen, in conference scams and other scam types too. The scammer "piggybacks" off a legitimate conference/website/company. He uses the details for the legitimate entity, and may reference a real website and phone number, but he changes the contact and email to one created for scamming. We are seeing more realistic conference scams that use some or all of the details of legitimate conferences as people become more aware of the completely fake ones.

Unfortunately, there isn't a whole lot you can do with the scammer himself. Chances are good that he is not even in the US, and if so US law enforcement can't do anything about it. If there haven't been huge losses, it won't be on IC3's radar either. Closing their email address won't do any good either, as they will have another one up and running in minutes, and any posted warnings will become harder to find.

What you can do:
Post the actual email from the scammer here, including the scammer's email address, where the information will be picked up by google.

If the conference itself has a website, post a warning on the website. Include the letter, but make sure you are clear that ANY offers of free registration that involve sending money anywhere is a scam. This is important, because the scammer may have multiple letters and email addresses.

Thanks for the advice - we put a warning on our web site last week. The conference is the 27th Annual Computer Security Applications Conference (www.acsac.org). Ironic that we'd get this, given that we're a security conference! Much of the text is from our web site. The funny part is that one of the topics they list as a focus is internet scamming!

Following is the scam message, listing names and titles of our real people. Following that is the response that one of our participants got when he asked for more info.
